What built-in bookshelves cannot fix

Some parts of a job need another trade, from an electrician to a plumber or an engineer on the Gas Safe Register. Here is what to bear in mind:

  • Plumbing work around the shelves
  • Structural changes, like taking out a chimney breast
  • Making good walls that can’t take fixings

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can get in touch through our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer. How it works.

What goes into it

  • Birch plywood
  • Spray-painted finish

Built-in bookshelves in South Acton

Older rooms often have skirting, picture rails and coving to work around. Shelves can stop beneath the picture rail, run to the cornice or be cut around the details. Walls in older houses are rarely flat, so we scribe the edges on site. We make built-in bookshelves from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are room for a record collection and a home library or study.

London homes run from Victorian terraces and interwar semis to mansion blocks and recent flats, and a home in South Acton could be any of these. Each brings different walls and floors, so the design of built-in bookshelves starts with a look at what you have. A period house may need scribing to bowed walls, while a newer flat may need fixings for plasterboard.

Our quotes are written in plain words. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

Do you need built-in bookshelves in South Acton?

Records, large art books and collections need shelves sized for them. Off-the-shelf bookcases seldom have the right depth.

We are often asked to help with:

  • Shelving that frames a window
  • A room lined with books
  • Bookshelves in keeping with an older house
  • Bare walls that could hold shelving

Living in a block of flats near South Acton station? Then check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

Choosing a carpenter

  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room
  • Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?
  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls.

Questions we are often asked

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

My home in South Acton is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. Built-in bookshelves are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

Who chooses the colour?

You choose it. The paint colour is agreed with you before anything is painted.

Can built-in shelves be adjustable?

It’s your choice: fixed, adjustable or a mix. Fixed shelves add stiffness to the bookcase, while adjustable ones let you change the spacing later. Many people choose both.

How do I get a quote for built-in bookshelves in South Acton?

It’s easiest to message us from the contact page and let us know about the room. We then arrange a design visit, measure up and send a quote in writing.

What happens if there is a radiator where I want shelves?

We plan around it with care. We leave space so heat isn’t trapped. Moving a radiator is a plumber’s job, and is best done before we fit.

From workshop to your room

When we arrive on fitting day, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. Next, we carry in the sections built in our workshop. How long the fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. London parking ranges from controlled zones to driveways and private bays, so let us know what’s near you during the design visit. For a flat, building rules on lifts and working hours are worth checking.

  1. You tell us about your books and the wall you have in mind. It might be a whole wall, an alcove or the space around a door.
  2. We come to measure and talk through depths, heights and cupboards.
  3. A quote in writing follows. Read it through and ask us anything.
  4. Once you’re happy, the shelving is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with shelves thick enough for their span.
  5. We bring it to your home and fit it in place.

How to prepare

  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Empty the space we will be working in

Starting with a design visit

The quote is built from the design visit. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing. To arrange the visit, get in touch through our contact form.

What it costs

Not every room costs the same, and it comes down to:

  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • How square the room is
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • How big the furniture is

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size is the starting point. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

What to send when you contact us

Ahead of the design visit, we’ll normally ask about:

  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Examples of the look you’re after
  • A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner

It is useful to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space, along with rough measurements. To send them over, fill in our short enquiry form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.
