Fitted wardrobes for homes in South Acton

Homes built before 1919 make up about 41% of the housing in the streets around South Acton, with about 26% built since 2000, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. South Acton is partly covered by the Gunnersbury Park Conservation Area, one of the conservation areas recorded by Historic England. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. A quarter or more of the homes in the area around South Acton (about 26%) were built since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Bedrooms in homes built since 2000 tend to be compact, with stud walls, so fitted furniture is fixed to suit the board.

If your children go to Ark Acton Academy or a school nearby, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Gunnersbury House, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. Gunnersbury Park, about 0.3 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice.

How we make fitted wardrobes for South Acton

An outside wall is often colder than an inside one, and clothes pressed against a cold wall can lead to condensation. Where a wardrobe goes on an external wall, we plan ventilation behind and inside it to help avoid condensation and mould. Moisture-resistant MDF is a sensible choice there too. Typical reasons to get in touch are too little room for clothes and a room too narrow for hinged doors, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

A bedroom used as a guest room, a study or a dressing room needs different storage. Whatever your home in South Acton is like, the first question during the design visit is what the room needs to do. The layout, the doors and the inside follow from that. You choose the colour, spray-painted or hand-painted.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

What happens on fitting day

Once the main sections are fixed in place, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Fitting day means joining the sections, fitting them to the walls and setting them level. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether brick, block, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

  1. To begin, send us a few details through our contact form; a brief note on the bedroom and what you need to store is enough.
  2. We visit to measure up and work out the inside with you, from rail heights to drawer depths.
  3. A written quote follows, listing the layout inside, the doors and the finish.
  4. Everything is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, which holds screws well for rails and runners.
  5. The wardrobes are fitted in your home, spray-painted in the workshop or hand-painted on site, and the inside fittings go in last.

Before fitting day

  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Tell us about parking near your home

FAQs: fitted wardrobes in South Acton

Does a conservation area in or near South Acton affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in South Acton?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It’s useful to let us know about parking at the measuring visit, so we can plan the day around it.

What affects the price of fitted wardrobes?

It depends on the size, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish. We send a written quote after the design visit.

Is it OK to put a wardrobe on an outside wall?

Yes, as long as it’s ventilated. An outside wall is often colder than an inside one, so we allow for airflow behind and inside the wardrobe, which helps avoid condensation.

Do pictures help?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit, along with rough sizes. It helps to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

Do you do the electrics?

No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician. We’ll design around them.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

What it’s made from

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is stiff and grips screws firmly, which suits wardrobe carcasses, shelves and drawers. Its layered edge can be painted or left on show.

Moisture-resistant MDF

Wardrobe doors are large, so stability matters. MDF gives a flat, smooth surface that paints well, for plain or panelled doors alike.

What we do not do

Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. That means:

  • Any wiring or new sockets (your electrician handles those)
  • Curing damp, which needs the right specialist
  • Converting a loft (we build storage in lofts that are already converted)

If in doubt, you can drop us a line using the contact form and describe the room. Our process from visit to fitting.

What goes into it

  • Spray-painted finish
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Birch plywood
  • Hanging rails, shelves and drawers
  • Hinged or sliding doors

Tips worth knowing

A few practical points help before and after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:

  • Think about whether hinged doors will clear the bed
  • Think about where you’ll keep shoes, bags and folded clothes
  • Work out the split between long and short hanging
  • Ask your electrician about moving sockets early

New paintwork is dry to the touch long before it has fully cured. At first, handle the doors with care and do not scrub the surfaces.

Make sure vents at the top or bottom of the wardrobe are not blocked. Watch for musty smells or marks on clothes and have the cause looked at early.
