South Acton TV and Media Units

In South Acton, we design TV and media units around the room you actually have. We design your TV unit at a visit to your home, make it in our workshop and fit it.

  • A TV stand that does not fit the wall
  • A big screen that dominates the wall
  • Leads that show from every angle

How we make TV and media units for South Acton

Speakers need space to be heard properly. A soundbar can sit on a shelf below the screen. Speakers work best in the open rather than behind closed doors. We make TV and media units from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are equipment with nowhere proper to go and alcoves either side of the chimney breast going to waste.

Some living rooms in London have tall ceilings and cornices, while others have low, plain ceilings. In South Acton, as anywhere, we measure the height as carefully as the width, since it sets how tall TV and media units can be. Each section is sized to fit the route into the room.

The quote comes in writing, so there’s time to read it properly. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

A bespoke unit isn’t instant: there’s a design visit, a quote and making time. For a short stay, a standalone stand can make more sense. Standard units come with shelves and rails where the maker put them, which may not suit what you need to store. Fitted furniture is laid out inside around your things.

Rooms that are not square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. That is reflected in the quote, written once we have measured up.

Questions we’re often asked

Does a conservation area in or near South Acton affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Is South Acton in the area you cover for TV and media units?

Yes. South Acton is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Hounslow and London. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you don’t need to stay in the room.

Is there room for a soundbar?

We plan open spaces for speakers and soundbars. Closed doors muffle sound.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture, which helps avoid condensation and mould. If there’s damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

What if the stairs or lift are small?

Getting it in is planned at the measuring visit. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doors, and the furniture is made in sections sized to get through.

South Acton homes and TV and media units

About 41% of the homes in the streets around South Acton went up before 1919, and about 26% since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. South Acton is partly covered by the Gunnersbury Park Conservation Area, one of the conservation areas recorded by Historic England. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house does not normally need planning permission. The council can confirm if you’re not sure. The share of homes built before 1919 around South Acton, about 41%, is well above the figure for Hounslow as a whole, about 16%, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. So older-house details are more likely to come into the design of TV and media units.

Living in a block of flats near South Acton station? Then TV and media units are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. For families living near Ark Acton Academy, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design.

Is it time for TV and media units?

In older living rooms, a TV can look out of place. Building it into the alcoves or around the chimney breast makes it part of the room.

We are often asked to help with:

  • Leads that show from every angle
  • Alcoves either side of the chimney breast going to waste
  • Clutter around the TV
  • Speakers muffled behind doors

Gunnersbury Park, about 0.3 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at.

What to check before you book

  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • Real projects you can actually look at
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?

Looking after your furniture

These points come up often when people plan TV and media units. They help before and after fitting:

  • Plan open spaces for anything controlled by a remote
  • Decide whether the TV will be wall-mounted or stand on the unit
  • Let us know about parking and access at the measuring visit
  • Book your electrician first if sockets need to move

Vents and equipment shelves gather dust, so clean them now and then. Clear vents keep equipment cooler.

Heavy equipment is best kept low.

How fitting day works

There is not much for you to do on fitting day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and the room should already be cleared, as agreed at the measuring visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. On fitting day, the sections are assembled, scribed to the walls and levelled. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether brick, block, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about the room and your equipment, including the size of the screen.
  2. We come to measure, note the sockets and agree the layout.
  3. We send a written quote for the unit, ready for you to check.
  4. Each section is built in our workshop to the measurements we took, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home, with the cable routes ready to use.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
