Wall Beds in South Acton

In South Acton, we design wall beds around the room you actually have. Your wall bed is designed at a visit to your home and built in our workshop.

  • A living room with a bed that folds away
  • Hiding the bed when it is not in use
  • A bed that fills a little-used room

Is bespoke worth it?

A wall bed is fixed to the house, so it stays when you move. It’s worth thinking about how long you plan to stay before you decide. Walls and floors are seldom perfectly flat in any home, so standalone furniture can lean or leave gaps. Built-in pieces are adjusted to the room as they go in.

In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension near your home. It is useful to talk about parking at the design visit, so we can plan for it.

Wall beds for homes in South Acton

The mattress has to suit the mechanism, because the mechanism maker sets limits on size, depth and weight. We will talk through what suits the bed at the measuring visit, so you can choose a mattress that works. Most enquiries start with a proper bed instead of a sofa bed and a guest room that sits empty most of the time, and the answer is made at our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Wherever your home in South Acton sits in London’s mix of housing, the furniture starts from your room, not a standard size. On an external wall, ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps keep condensation away. The inside layout is planned around what you actually store.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

Caring for painted furniture

None of this takes much effort. What we’d suggest:

  • Look at your lease before fixing to the walls
  • Keep children away while the bed moves
  • Plan a cupboard for spare bedding
  • Clean the cabinet with a soft, damp cloth

The mechanism maker’s guidance says how much bedding can stay on the bed when it folds away. Bulky duvets and pillows may need storing nearby.

Think about who will sleep in the bed and how often. That helps decide its size and the mechanism as well as the storage around it.

Questions we’re often asked

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

How do you fit wall beds in a flat in South Acton?

We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Wall beds are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work.

Is a mattress included with the wall bed?

What matters most is that the mattress suits the mechanism. We go through the mechanism’s limits when we measure, so you can choose with confidence.

Should I send pictures?

Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, particularly with rough measurements. To send them, use our contact form.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

Flats, leases and landlords

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, often to make the most of a small or tricky room. It’s made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, finished by spray or by hand.

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind.

How fitting day works

The last stage of the day is the finish. With a spray finish from the workshop, there’s normally only filling and touching up to do in the room; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. On fitting day, the sections are assembled, scribed to the walls and levelled. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether brick, block, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the room and how often the bed is used.
  2. We come to measure, look at the wall and floor, and go through the layout with you.
  3. We send a quote setting out the design, materials and finish, for you to look over.
  4. The bed cabinet and any shelves or desk are made in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The bed and cabinets are fitted in your home and the mechanism fixed securely. The finish is sprayed in our workshop or painted by hand on site.

Before fitting day

  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture

How to get a quote

Getting a quote starts with a few details: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of pictures if you can take them. To send them, use our contact form. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

  • Lease checks, which are for you and your building’s managers
  • Wiring for lights or chargers
  • Building work to make a wall sound

Not sure whether your space suits wall beds? You can tell us about the room on our contact form and we’ll tell you. How it works.
