Materials and finishes
Plinths and scribe strips
A plinth lifts the bookcase and takes up an uneven floor. It can line up with the skirting.
Moisture-resistant MDF
MDF gives sharp edges and smooth faces, ready for spray or hand painting. The moisture-resistant grade is our choice.
Built-in bookshelves in Spring Park
Bookshelves don’t have to stop at a doorway or a window. A bookcase can wrap around a door, with shelves running over the top, and the same works around a window with a seat beneath it. It uses wall space that often goes to waste. Typical reasons to get in touch are bowing shelves in an old bookcase and shelves deep enough for large books, and the answer is built in our workshop from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.
Plenty of semis and interwar houses have been extended at the back or had the back rooms knocked through, which matters around Spring Park, where homes like these are a big part of the housing. In a long knocked-through room, built-in bookshelves can run the full length of one wall, or mark out the sitting end from the dining end. An extension’s plasterboard walls need different fixings from the original brick or block.
A written quote is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It sets out the built-in bookcase designed for your room, what it’s made from and how it’s finished, and it is what the workshop builds to.

FAQs: built-in bookshelves in Spring Park
Do you cover homes near West Wickham station?
Yes. We cover all of Croydon and the rest of London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
Can you make built-in bookshelves for a home in Spring Park?
Yes. We cover all of Croydon and the rest of London, and Spring Park is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, followed by a quote.
Do I need to be in when you fit?
Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It’s good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.
What happens if there is a radiator where I want shelves?
We plan around it with care. We leave space so heat isn’t trapped. Moving a radiator is a plumber’s job, and is best done before we fit.
Should my shelves be fixed or adjustable?
It is your choice: fixed, adjustable or a mix. Fixed shelves add stiffness to the bookcase, and adjustable ones let the spacing change. Many people choose both.
Do I need permission in a conservation area?
Not normally. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. Listed buildings may need listed building consent for works that affect their character, so ask the council’s conservation officer.
How fitting day works
Fitting day follows a set order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. If you have a driveway, it can make unloading simpler, so let us know during the design visit. Otherwise, a visitor permit or a nearby bay helps. Doorways, stairs and floors are covered on the way in.
- You get in touch about built-in bookshelves.
- At the design visit we measure and plan the shelves together.
- We send a quote in writing.
- We make the shelving in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. A spray finish is applied there too, if you chose it.
- We fit it in your home and go through it with you before we leave. Fresh paint needs time to cure, so it’s best to load the shelves gently at first.
Before we arrive
- Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
Getting a quote
If you know what you want, say so; if you don’t, that is fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, drop us a line using the contact form.
Advice
Built-in bookshelves in Spring Park: local notes
Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 62% of the housing in the area around Spring Park, with about 22% built between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Spring Park include Church of All Saints (Grade II), under half a mile south, and The White Lodge (Grade II), under half a mile north-east. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, like fixing into original panelling. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. Many London boroughs run controlled parking zones, and Croydon sets its own rules. If your road in Spring Park falls in a zone, the van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Tell us what the parking is like at the design visit.
Living in a block of flats near West Wickham station? Then the route in is measured not just the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. If you live near Millers Pond, built-in bookshelves can be arranged to keep the window and the light clear. The wider area includes historic houses like Addington Palace, about 1.3 miles south. For a period home anywhere nearby, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.

When is bespoke worth it?
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it’s quick to buy.
Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
A standalone bookcase needs to be fixed to the wall for safety anyway, so the difference is smaller than it seems. What changes is the fit, the shelf strength and the finish, and every part is planned for the wall. Ready-made units come in standard depths that rarely suit every space, which may be too deep for one spot and too shallow for another. Fitted furniture is made to the depth the space can take.
We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

Pricing built-in bookshelves in Spring Park
There is no set price, because there is no set room. What affects it comes down to:
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
- How many doors and drawers there are
- How big the furniture is
We don’t publish set prices, because each job is designed for a single room. Instead, we measure, go through the design and then quote in writing. To start, get in touch through our contact form.
Helping us understand the room
Getting a few details early makes the visit more useful. Where you can, include:
- Approximate measurements of the space
- Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
- Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
- Any ideas or images you have saved
Photos help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, along with rough sizes. To send them over, message us from the contact page, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.
