Bespoke kitchens in Mildmay
How we make bespoke kitchens for Mildmay
A bespoke kitchen is built around the room you have. Each cabinet is made to the real measurements of your walls, floor and ceiling, so there are no filler panels covering tricky gaps. The layout, storage and finish are planned with you, and the kitchen is made in our workshop before it’s fitted. We make kitchens from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and people most often get in touch about more storage in a small kitchen and a pantry cupboard with shelves and drawers.
Narrow hallways in Victorian and Edwardian terraces set limits on how long a cabinet or panel can be. Around Mildmay, a large share of homes were built before 1919, so the route to the kitchen is measured at the measuring visit. Long runs arrive in sections and are joined in place, with the joins placed where they will not show.
Everything we agree at the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

Bespoke kitchens for homes in Mildmay
About 48% of the homes in the streets around Mildmay went up before 1919, and about 22% between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. There are 110 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Mildmay. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. About 27% of households in the streets around Mildmay live in flats in converted or shared houses, the 2021 Census shows. Conversions often leave rooms in unusual shapes, with partition walls, boxed-in pipes and chimney breasts in odd places, and the route in may go through a shared hall and stairs. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls.
If you live in a period home close to Church of St Jude and St Paul, tall ceilings can take larder cupboards right up to the top. Sutton House, about 1.4 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, cabinets will be scribed to walls and floors that are rarely true. If you live near Highbury Fields, a tall cupboard for outdoor things can be part of the kitchen design.
Mildmay is about 1 mile west of Highbury, part of the London Borough of Islington. Homes in Mildmay are part of the area we cover for bespoke kitchens. We cover places right across Islington, large and small.
Design visits and fitting in N1, N16 and E8 work the same way as everywhere else we cover. If your home is on one of them, tell us at the measuring visit, as some main roads have strict stopping rules. Nearby, we also make bespoke kitchens in Newington Green (1 mile north), De Beauvoir Town (1 mile south), Canonbury (1 mile south-west), Kingsland (1 mile south-east) and Highbury (1 mile west). Made-to-measure kitchens or ready-made?
Neither choice is right for every home. In a simple modern kitchen, off-the-shelf can be enough. For period homes, tricky rooms or a painted look, bespoke tends to earn its place. Recesses in older houses come in every size except the standard ones, so off-the-shelf pieces either do not fit or leave a gap either side. Made for the space, the furniture uses the full width and height.
Access to the room makes a difference too. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, which the quote allows for. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit.

Fitting day, step by step
Every fitting follows the same order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on how many units there are and how the room is laid out, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. If your hall still has its original tiles or boards, they’re covered before any carrying starts. Fixings into older walls are made carefully, as lath and plaster can crack if treated roughly. Any decorating around the new pieces is for your decorator.

Related advice
Questions from Mildmay
My home in Mildmay is a period house with walls that are not straight. Is that a problem?
Yes, that’s normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.
Will a conservation area stop me having bespoke kitchens fitted in Mildmay?
Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
What are the kitchen cabinets made of?
We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray painting or hand painting. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you don’t need to stay in the room, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.
Do you work for landlords and letting agents?
Yes. We make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let as well as for homeowners. Access has to be agreed with the tenants.
What happens at the measuring visit?
It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a quote in writing.
Could you do it yourself?
Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it is easy to buy.
