Bespoke kitchens in Farringdon

A dresser brings a traditional feel to a kitchen, and it suits many period homes. Each dresser is made for its wall, scribed to follow it and painted to suit the room. We make kitchens from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are making the most of a galley kitchen and cabinets that suit lean and sloping walls.

Most households around Farringdon live in purpose-built flats, so kitchens are often compact or part of an open-plan living room. Cabinets made to the room’s exact widths make the most of every wall. Everything is built in sections that fit the route into the flat.

We write quotes in plain English, without jargon. You’ll see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, all taken from the design visit.

Plinths and scribe strips

A plinth hides adjustable feet and lets the cabinets sit level. Scribe strips close the gap to a wall that isn’t straight.

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting gives a softer, traditional look in an older home.

Bespoke kitchens for homes in Farringdon

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Farringdon were built since 2000 (about 32%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 28%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Within a mile of the centre of Farringdon, 24 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings. About 83% of households in the streets around Farringdon live in purpose-built flats, based on Census 2021. For a flat, kitchens are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.

The wider area includes historic houses such as Dr Johnson's House, about 0.4 miles south-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, tall ceilings can take larder cupboards right up to the top. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Priory Church of St John of Jerusalem, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent. If you live in a flat close to Farringdon station, it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: flat-pack is usually cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is typically a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Neither choice is right for every home. If the room is square and the budget is tight, a ready-made kitchen may do the job. Where the room is awkward, the house is older or you want a painted kitchen that suits it, bespoke is normally worth considering. Ready-made units cannot follow the boxing and risers found in many flats, leaving gaps or blocking access. Built-in pieces are designed around them, with access kept.

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit.

FAQs: bespoke kitchens in Farringdon

I live in a flat in Farringdon. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. Kitchens are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

I live near Farringdon station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Islington and the rest of London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Typically not. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. Listed buildings can require listed building consent for works that affect their character, so check with the council first.

How much does a bespoke kitchen cost?

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. A small galley and a large kitchen with a larder and island are very different jobs, so we price it after the design visit. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, by prior arrangement. Let us know when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. We’ll also ask about access and parking, and afterwards we send a written quote.

How fitting works for bespoke kitchens

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference. After that, it is fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that’s solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Loading near a block of flats can take some planning, so details of bays, permits or a loading area help. Once inside, the sections are joined and fixed with fixings that suit the wall. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. It starts with a short note from you about the room.
  2. We visit to plan the layout and check how the cabinets will get into the room.
  3. A quote in writing follows, covering the cabinets, materials and finish.
  4. In our workshop we build the kitchen from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in pieces that suit the route in.
  5. We carry everything in and fit the cabinets, while your plumber, a Gas Safe engineer and your electrician do the plumbing, gas and electrics.

Preparing the room

  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
