How we make bespoke kitchens for Hoxton

Some kitchens suit a dresser, with cupboards below and open shelves above, and it suits many period homes. We make dressers to fit the wall they stand against, scribed to follow it and painted to suit the room. If you’re living with a dresser that suits a period house and an island where space allows, kitchens made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

Many homes around Hoxton have been built since 2000, and newer homes usually have open-plan kitchens. Cabinets can be designed for the open space, with an island if the room allows. Walls in newer homes are often plasterboard on studs, so wall cabinets are fixed into the studs or use fixings made for the board.

A quote in writing follows the design visit. It sets out the design we have talked through, the materials and the finish, so it is clear what’s included.

Made-to-measure kitchens in Hoxton

Homes built since 2000 make up about 36% of the housing in the streets around Hoxton, with about 26% built between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. The National Heritage List has 81 entries within half a mile of the centre of Hoxton. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. Purpose-built flats are home to about 74% of households in the streets around Hoxton, based on Census 2021. For a flat, kitchens are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.

The wider area includes historic houses like Mansion House, about 1.4 miles south. For a period home anywhere nearby, cabinets will be scribed to walls and floors that are rarely true. If your children go to Shoreditch Park Primary School or a school nearby, a kitchen with a spot for school letters and lunch boxes makes mornings easier. Living in a block of flats near Hoxton station? Then kitchens are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.

Hoxton is about 1 mile south-east of Shoreditch, in the London Borough of Hackney. Our work covers every London borough and the City of London, Hoxton included. In Hackney, Hoxton is one of the places we cover.

Every home in N1, N1P and EC1V is within our area for bespoke kitchens. You’ll find streets here such as City Road, Noel Road and East Road, and homes on each of them are within our area for bespoke kitchens. Hoxton is near the A1200 and A1208, so if your home is on a main road, mention it when you contact us. Close by, we also work in Haggerston (1 mile east), Shoreditch (1 mile south-east), Canonbury (1 mile north), De Beauvoir Town (1 mile north) and St Luke's (1 mile south-west). Elsewhere in Hackney, we also cover Homerton (2 miles north-east), West Hackney (2 miles north), Hackney (2 miles north-east), Lower Clapton (2 miles north-east), Stoke Newington (2 miles north) and Clapton (2 miles north-east). Being one of the larger places in Hackney, Hoxton is covered for bespoke kitchens and everything else we make.

Landmarks near Hoxton

We fit furniture in homes around Stag's Head pub, Hackney University Technical College and Bishopsgate Institute Special Collections and Archives and the streets around them. Hoxton has its own railway station: Hoxton station. Other landmarks nearby include St Leonard's Hospital (close by, under half a mile east) and Montfichet's Tower (1.6 miles south-west). Green spaces nearby include Barnsbury Wood.

Flats, conversions and lettings

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind.

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too. It is made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, with a spray or hand-painted finish.

How fitting day works

Getting everything level comes first. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Newer developments sometimes have their own parking and loading rules, so it helps to let us know during the design visit. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled and fixed. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch with some details about the kitchen.
  2. The design visit covers measuring and planning the layout, where space allows.
  3. You receive a written quote.
  4. The kitchen is made in our workshop.
  5. The cabinets are fitted in your home, with plumbing, gas and electrics by your plumber, an engineer on the Gas Safe Register and your electrician. It helps to have those trades booked in good time.

Preparing the room

  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Tell us about parking near your home

Arranging a design visit

You don’t need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To arrange it, tell us about the room on our contact form with some details about the room. You receive a quote in writing after the visit.

Advice

Is bespoke worth it?

Standard cabinets come in set widths, so the room has to fit the units. Ours are made to fit the room, so the runs can fill the space properly. Newer homes often have compact rooms where standard furniture leaves tricky gaps, and fitted furniture uses that space. It works around service boxing too.

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, and that’s part of the price. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit.

FAQs: bespoke kitchens in Hoxton

I live in a flat in Hoxton. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Does a conservation area in or near Hoxton affect fitted furniture?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Can I have a kitchen island?

Yes, where there’s space. At the design visit we check the clearances around it. If it would crowd the kitchen, we will say so.

What happens when you come to measure?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. We’ll also ask about access and parking, and a quote in writing follows.

How are bespoke kitchens priced?

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Every kitchen is different, so we quote once we’ve measured. To get started, use our contact form.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You choose it. We agree the colour with you.

Boards, parts and paint

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which suits drawer boxes and shelves. The edge can be left on show or painted.

Spray-painted finish

Spray-painted cabinets arrive finished, so there is less to do on site.

What we don’t do

We make and fit furniture, and we do not do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. Please bear these in mind too:

  • Moving water or waste pipes
  • Connecting a gas hob or cooker
  • New sockets or circuits

If in doubt, you can get in touch through our contact form and describe the room. How it works.
