Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Larders, dressers and tall cupboards are hard to find in standard sizes that suit an older room. We can build them to fit, painted to match the rest of the kitchen. Tall ceilings in older homes leave a band of empty wall above standard furniture, and that space collects dust instead of storage. Built-in pieces can run to the cornice or the picture rail.

Access to the room makes a difference too. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, and that is part of the price. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured.

Bespoke kitchens in Childs Hill: what you get

Islands work well in kitchens with room to walk around them. There needs to be enough clear floor around it to open doors and move about, and in a narrow kitchen an island can make the room harder to use. Where space is tight, a peninsula or a longer run may suit better. If you are living with cabinets built around the appliances you choose and a larder for food and small appliances, kitchens made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed can solve it.

With a large share of homes around Childs Hill built before 1919, a chimney breast often survives in the kitchen, and it can frame a range cooker or a dresser. Any capped chimney should stay ventilated, and damp is dealt with before anything is fitted. Plumbing, gas and electrics are for your plumber, a Gas Safe engineer and your electrician.

After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It sets out the design we have talked through, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you are getting.

How fitting day works

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and lift the floor protection. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and explain how to look after the paint. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the kitchen and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. On fitting day in an older house, the main job is scribing to walls and levelling on floors that slope, so each piece is trimmed and adjusted on site. Floors are protected, and dust is kept down as far as possible. It helps to let us know about parking at the design visit, as terraced streets are often busy.

  1. It starts with a short note from you about the room.
  2. We visit to plan the layout and check how the cabinets will get into the room. Tell us about parking too, as a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension.
  3. A quote in writing follows, covering the cabinets, materials and finish.
  4. The cabinets are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, sized to come in through your doors.
  5. We carry everything in and fit the cabinets, while your plumber, an engineer on the Gas Safe Register and your electrician do the plumbing, gas and electrics.

Before we arrive

  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway

Advice

Questions we are often asked

My home in Childs Hill is a period house with walls that aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

Yes, that’s normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

I live in a flat in Childs Hill. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

What materials do you use for kitchens?

Moisture-resistant MDF for painted doors and panels, and birch plywood where strength matters. The finish is spray painted in our workshop or hand painted, in colours you choose.

Can I choose my own worktop and appliances?

The worktop, sink and appliances are the ones you choose, and the cabinets are made to suit them. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote.

How much does a bespoke kitchen cost?

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Every kitchen is different, so we price it after the design visit. To arrange a visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of.

What we don’t do

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:

  • Wiring for appliances and lights
  • Building work, like removing walls
  • Making good walls and ceilings

If in doubt, you can use our contact form and describe the room. How a job runs, step by step.

What it’s made from

  • Larders and dressers
  • Islands where space allows
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Spray-painted finish

How we price bespoke kitchens

The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. That depends on:

  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • Parking and unloading on your street

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, and the quote follows.

What to send when you contact us

When you contact us, these help most:

  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • Your postcode and the borough
  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling

The quote is built from the design visit. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and talk through the design with you. Afterwards, we send a written quote. To book one, fill in our short enquiry form.

Kitchens in Childs Hill homes

The centre of Childs Hill is within about a quarter of a mile of the Redington Frognall Conservation Area. About 40% of households in the neighbourhood around Childs Hill live in purpose-built flats, according to Census 2021. For a flat, kitchens are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.

For families living near All Saints' CofE Primary School NW2, a kitchen with a spot for school letters and lunch boxes makes mornings easier. If you live in a period home close to All Saints, cabinets will be scribed to walls and floors that are rarely true. Close to Childs Hill Park? A tall cupboard for outdoor things can be part of the kitchen design.
