Bespoke kitchens for homes in Hampstead
Older London homes are rarely simple places to fit a kitchen. Walls lean, corners are not square and floors slope, which shows up quickly along a run of cabinets. Each cabinet is trimmed to the wall and levelled on a plinth or adjustable feet giving a level line for the worktop you choose. If you are living with room for everything in the kitchen and cabinets that suit lean and sloping walls, kitchens made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish can solve it.
Around Hampstead, a large share of homes date from before 1919, and in many Victorian and Edwardian terraces the kitchen sits in a narrow back addition, or in a side return that has since been extended. Cabinets are scribed to walls that wander and levelled on floors that slope. You choose the worktop, sink and appliances, and the cabinets are made around them.
We write quotes in plain English. They say what will be made, what it’s made from and how it will be finished, all taken from the design visit.

Before and after fitting day
Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. Beyond that, these tips help:
- Deal with damp walls first
- Allow space to walk round an island
- Measure the route into the kitchen
- Pick the oven, fridge and dishwasher first
Doors are hung and adjusted when we fit them. Walls and floors shift slightly through the year, and hinges can be adjusted to keep the gaps even.
Think about how the cabinets will get in. Workshop-made furniture comes in sections sized for stairs, hallways and lifts, so let us know about any narrow spots.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?
There is a place for both. If the room is square and the budget is tight, a ready-made kitchen may do the job. Where the room is tricky, the house is older or you want a painted kitchen that suits it, bespoke is usually worth considering. Ready-made tall pieces have to be fixed to the wall for safety, and older walls of brick or lath and plaster make that harder than it looks. Fitted furniture is designed with the wall in mind.
Awkward rooms take more time: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. That is reflected in the quote, which we write after seeing the room.

Made-to-measure kitchens in Hampstead
In the area around Hampstead, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 68%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 9%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Within a mile of the centre of Hampstead, 11 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. On TfL’s red routes, the rules on stopping and loading are strict. If your home is on or just off a main road, it helps to mention it. We’ll plan where the van can stop.
If your children go to Fitzjohn's Primary School or a school nearby, a drawer set aside for lunch boxes and water bottles keeps mornings calmer. The wider area includes historic houses such as Fenton House, about 0.4 miles north. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings can take larder cupboards right up to the top. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Institute of St Marcellina, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent.
Hampstead is within the London Borough of Camden, about 3 miles south-east of St Pancras. Homes in Hampstead are part of the area we cover for bespoke kitchens. Hampstead is one of the places in Camden where we make bespoke kitchens, and the borough has 28 places on our list.
Design visits and fitting in NW3, NW6, NW11 and N2 work the same way as everywhere else we cover. Streets in the area include Hampstead High Street, New End Square and The Mount Square, and homes on each of them are within our area for bespoke kitchens. Main roads around Hampstead include the A1 and A502. If your home is on one of them, tell us during the design visit, as some main roads have strict stopping rules. Nearby, we also make bespoke kitchens in Greenhill (1 mile north-east), West Hampstead (1 mile west), Fortune Green (1 mile west), Vale of Health (1 mile north) and South Hampstead (1 mile south). Across the rest of Camden, our area takes in St Pancras (3 miles south-east), West End (4 miles south-east), St Giles (4 miles south-east), Seven Dials (4 miles south-east), Holborn (4 miles south-east) and Bloomsbury (3 miles south-east). As one of the bigger places in Camden, Hampstead is covered for all of our fitted furniture.
What’s near Hampstead
Around Hampstead, we cover homes near South Hampstead High School, King William IV Public House and Cecil Sharp House. There is a railway station in Hampstead itself: Finchley Road & Frognal station. A little further out are O2 Centre (a few minutes’ walk south) and Isokon Gallery (0.8 miles east). Not far away are Belsize Wood and Parliament Hill.
How fitting works for bespoke kitchens
Every fitting follows the same order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on how many units there are and how the room is laid out, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Hallways in period houses are often narrow, and the stairs turn sharply, so kitchens are made in sections sized to get through. Floors, stairs and doorways are covered before anything is carried through, and the sections are joined and scribed in the room.
- We start with how you use the kitchen and what isn’t working. It helps to know the worktop, sink and appliances you have in mind.
- We come to measure up and plan the layout with you, including where the sink and appliances will go.
- You get a quote in writing for the cabinets, with the materials and finish set out, for you to read through.
- We build and finish the kitchen in our workshop.
- We fit the cabinets in your home; plumbing, gas and electrics are done by your plumber, a Gas Safe registered engineer and your electrician. We don’t arrange those trades, so it is useful to book them early.
Preparing the room
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
- Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
Arranging a design visit
To get a quote, send us a few details through our contact form and tell us a little about the room. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and send you a quote in writing afterwards.
Advice
Questions we are often asked
My house in Hampstead is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?
Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Hampstead?
It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.
Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?
There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.
Do you do the plumbing and electrics?
No. We make and fit the kitchen cabinets. Plumbing is done by your plumber, gas by a Gas Safe registered engineer and electrics by your electrician, and we plan the cabinets around their work.
Do pictures help?
Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. To send them, send us a few details through our contact form.
How are bespoke kitchens priced?
Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Every kitchen is different, so we quote once we’ve measured. To get started, message us from the contact page.
