How we make bespoke kitchens for Golders Green
A kitchen needs other trades as well as a carpenter. Plumbing is done by your plumber, gas by an engineer on the Gas Safe Register and electrics by your electrician, so the design allows for pipes, cables and connections. If your home has a layout for a small or awkward room and more storage in a small kitchen, that is what kitchens are for, made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.
In a house built before 1919, a wall that looks solid may be lath and plaster. Since a large share of homes around Golders Green are that old, we check each wall before wall cabinets are planned. If a wall cannot take wall cabinets, tall larders or a dresser standing on the floor can do the job.
The furniture is built in our workshop after you have had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

How fitting day works
When we arrive on fitting day, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. Next, we carry in the sections made at our workshop, a piece at a time. The time the fitting takes depends on how many units there are and how the room is laid out, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In houses converted into flats, the route in may include a shared hall and stairs, so neighbours may appreciate a note before fitting day. The sections are sized for the narrowest point on the route. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.
- You get in touch and tell us about the room and how you cook. It helps to know the worktop, sink and appliances you have in mind.
- At the design visit we measure the room and discuss the layout, storage and finish, including where the sink and appliances will go.
- We send a quote that sets out the design, materials and finish, for you to read through.
- The cabinets, doors and drawer fronts are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- The kitchen is fitted in your home, and your plumber, electrician and a Gas Safe engineer do the plumbing, electrics and gas.
Before we arrive
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
- Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
Starting with a design visit

More for homes in Golders Green
Made-to-measure kitchens or ready-made?
Ready-made ranges rarely include a larder or dresser that fits a particular alcove. Bespoke joinery can be made for the exact space, painted to match the rest of the kitchen. Ready-made pieces are proportioned for newer homes and can look lost in an older one, while fitted furniture can follow the room’s own lines.
There is no price list, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote. To arrange a design visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.
What you get with us
- Made in moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
- Scribed to uneven walls
- We visit, measure and go through the design before we quote
- Designed for the room you have

Your questions about bespoke kitchens in Golders Green
Do you cover homes near Cricklewood station?
Yes, homes across Barnet and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can use our contact form with a few details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
Will a conservation area stop me having bespoke kitchens fitted in Golders Green?
Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
How do you get the furniture up the stairs?
It’s made in sections. That’s why we measure the stairs, lift and doorways at the design visit.
Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?
An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps to avoid condensation. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.
Should I send pictures?
Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space. You can send them when you use our contact form.
What do you do at the measuring visit?
It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a quote in writing.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.
Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, and standard units leave gaps.
Kitchens in Golders Green homes
Homes built before 1919 make up about 52% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Golders Green, with about 26% built between 1919 and 1939, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Within a mile of the centre of Golders Green, 3 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. More than half of the homes in the neighbourhood around Golders Green (about 52%) were built before 1919, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Older houses often have narrow kitchens at the back, with floors that slope, so cabinets are scribed and levelled on site.
For an older house near Church of St Alban the Martyr, tall ceilings can take larder cupboards right up to the top. Close to Childs Hill Park? A tall cupboard for outdoor things can be part of the kitchen design.

Practical tips
A few practical points help before and after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:
- Mention any parking or lift rules
- Give the paint time to cure fully
- Know your appliance sizes early
- Have damp sorted before fitting
Doors are hung and adjusted when we fit them. Walls and floors shift slightly through the year, and hinges can be adjusted to keep the gaps even.
Talk to your plumber, electrician and a Gas Safe engineer early. Their work and ours need to fit together, so it helps if everyone knows the plan.
