About our bespoke kitchens in Upminster
An island can be a good addition where there’s space for one. There needs to be enough clear floor around it to open doors and move about, because a cramped island makes a kitchen harder to work in. Where space is tight, a peninsula or a longer run may suit better. We make kitchens from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are cabinets for a narrow kitchen and extra cupboard space.
Where a back room and kitchen have been knocked together, a kitchen-diner may have a chimney breast at the dining end, which can frame a dresser or tall cupboards. If yours is one of the interwar houses or semis that make up much of the housing around Upminster, that’s a feature worth designing around. A blocked chimney still needs ventilating, and damp is sorted first.
A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It describes the kitchen we’ve designed for the room, what it is made from and how it is finished.

Practical tips
A little care keeps the finish looking good, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. Here are our suggestions:
- Measure the route into the kitchen
- Make sure walls are dry before cabinets go in
- Give the paint time to cure fully
- Talk to your other trades in good time
Doors are hung and adjusted when we fit them. Houses move a little with the seasons, and hinges can be adjusted to keep the gaps even.
If you live in a leasehold flat, check your lease before changing the kitchen. Your lease is something to check with whoever manages the building.
Questions we are often asked
Do you make bespoke kitchens for homes in Upminster?
Yes. We cover all of Havering and the rest of London, and Upminster is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Upminster?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.
How much time does fitting need?
It depends on the kitchen. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the kitchen and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.
What happens when you come to measure?
We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.
What are your kitchens made from?
MDF for smooth painted parts and birch plywood for drawer boxes and shelves. The finish is spray painted in our workshop or hand painted, in colours agreed with you.
Who chooses the colour?
The choice is yours, and it is agreed with you before painting. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you have chosen.
Flats, conversions and leaseholders
In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways not just the room, so each section is sized to get through without a struggle.
If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so tell us about it at the design visit.

What it is made from
Hand-painted finish
Hand painting can be done in your home, once the kitchen is fitted. It’s easy to touch up later.
Birch plywood
Long kitchen shelves can sag under plates and jars, and birch plywood helps.
How we price bespoke kitchens
When we put a quote together, we consider:
- The overall size of the piece
- The finish: spray painted or hand painted
- The internal fittings
- Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
Parking is part of the price picture in London. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay. Let us know about parking at the design visit, so it can be planned.
Helping us understand the room
The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. It is useful to include:
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
- Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
- The type of home and how the room is reached
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
You do not need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To get started, tell us about the room on our contact form. You receive a quote in writing after the visit.
What happens on fitting day
On the morning of the fitting, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. Next, we carry in the sections made at our workshop. The time the fitting takes depends on how many units there are and how the room is laid out, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. It helps to clear the room and the route before we arrive. Fitting day starts with protecting the floors and setting out the pieces. The pieces are levelled, fitted to the walls and fixed back.
- You get in touch and tell us about the room and how you cook.
- We visit to measure the room and go through the layout, the storage and where the appliances will sit.
- You receive a written quote for the kitchen cabinets. Plumbing, gas and electrics aren’t part of it: those are for your plumber, an engineer on the Gas Safe Register and your electrician.
- We build the cabinets, doors and drawer fronts in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit the cabinets in your home, working around your plumber, your electrician and an engineer on the Gas Safe Register.
Before we arrive
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
- Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
Getting a quote
We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, once the room is measured and the design talked through. For a quote, use our contact form.
Advice
Bespoke kitchens in Upminster: local notes
The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Upminster were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 52%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 32%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The National Heritage List records 10 entries within half a mile of the centre of Upminster. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. Detached and semi-detached houses are home to about 79% of households in the streets around Upminster, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. A house like that typically has more rooms to plan around than a flat, and sometimes a driveway that makes unloading easier.
If you live in a flat close to Upminster station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. Near listed buildings like Church of St Laurence, less than half a mile south-west of the centre of Upminster, older homes may keep original joinery that kitchens can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. Close to St. Andrew's Park? A cupboard by the back door for boots and coats can be built in with the kitchen.
