Bespoke kitchens in North Ockendon: what you get
Moisture-resistant MDF suits kitchens well, because it copes with a room that gets steamy. Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well. Cabinets are spray painted in the workshop or hand painted, in the colours you choose. If you are living with a central island in a larger kitchen and tall larder storage, that’s what kitchens are for, made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
A good part of the housing around North Ockendon is interwar, semi-detached or detached. Many 1930s houses started with a small kitchen at the back that has since been extended or knocked through. The cabinets are designed for the room as it is today, with an island where space allows.
A quote in writing follows the design visit. It sets out the design we have talked through, the materials and the finish.

Kitchens in North Ockendon: local notes
Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 73% of the housing in the neighbourhood around North Ockendon, with about 15% built between 1945 and 1972, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how kitchens are fixed and fitted. There are 8 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of North Ockendon. Being near listed buildings doesn’t make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. Controlled parking zones are common across London, and Havering sets its own rules. If your road in North Ockendon falls in a zone, the van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what the parking is like during the design visit.
If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of St Mary Magdalene, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. For a flat near Ockendon station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. If you live in a period home close to Church of St Mary Magdalene, cabinets will be scribed to walls and floors that are rarely true.

Questions from North Ockendon
Do you cover homes near Ockendon station?
Yes, homes across Havering and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.
Can you fit furniture on an external wall?
It can be done with some care: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. Damp treatment isn’t something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.
Do you do the plumbing and electrics?
No, those are jobs for other trades. Your plumber connects the sink and dishwasher, a Gas Safe registered engineer handles any gas, and your electrician does the wiring, while we make and fit the cabinets.
Do I get to choose the colour?
You choose it. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.
How do you get the furniture up the stairs?
The furniture is built in sections, sized for the route not just the room. At the design visit, we measure the route along with the room itself.
What affects the price in North Ockendon
Prices vary from room to room, and it comes down to:
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
- How many doors and drawers there are
- Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
There’s no price list, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a quote in writing, with the materials and finish set out. To arrange a design visit, fill in our short enquiry form.
Getting in touch
Some details help us understand the job before we visit. It’s useful to include:
- Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
- Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
- Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
- Your postcode and the borough
For a quote for bespoke kitchens in North Ockendon, drop us a line using the contact form. Tell us which room it is and roughly what you have in mind, with sizes if you have them. We will arrange a design visit, then send a written quote.
What bespoke kitchens can’t fix
Some parts of a job need another trade, from an electrician to a plumber or a Gas Safe registered engineer. Here is what to bear in mind:
- Making good walls and ceilings
- Gas work, which is for a Gas Safe engineer
- Building work, like removing walls
If in doubt, you can fill in our short enquiry form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How it works.

Made-to-measure kitchens or ready-made?
Choosing bespoke means a design visit, a quote, workshop time and fitting, rather than ordering from a range. In return, the storage, layout and finish are designed for you. Doors, windows and radiators rarely leave a gap that matches a standard width, which leaves ready-made pieces sitting awkwardly. Fitted furniture is designed around them.
Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, and that’s part of the price. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit.
Why choose us
- Workshop-made and fitted by us
- Built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
- A design visit, then a quote in writing
- Spray painted or hand painted, in the colour you choose
Take a look at how bespoke compares with ready-made and what to look for in a quote.
Fitting day, step by step
Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it is going into, and fitting day is where that happens. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the kitchen and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. If you have a driveway, it can make unloading simpler, so it’s worth mentioning at the design visit. Otherwise, details of permits or nearby bays help. Floors and doorways are protected while the pieces come in.
- First, you let us know about the room. Say a little about the way you cook.
- The design visit covers measuring and planning the layout, where space allows.
- A quote in writing is sent to you.
- Everything is made in our workshop.
- The cabinets are fitted in your home, with plumbing, gas and electrics by your plumber, an engineer on the Gas Safe Register and your electrician. It is useful to have those trades booked in good time.
How to prepare
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
Starting with a design visit
If you know what you want, say so; if you don’t, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we have measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, use our contact form.
Advice
Flat-pack or bespoke?
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot normally do that in an older room.
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
