What happens on fitting day

Getting everything level comes first. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch with some details about the kitchen.
  2. We visit, measure and talk through the layout, larder, dresser or island.
  3. You receive a quote in writing, setting out the cabinets, materials and finish.
  4. Everything is made in our workshop.
  5. We fit the kitchen in your home, while your plumber, a Gas Safe registered engineer and your electrician do the plumbing, gas and electrics.

Before we arrive

  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician beforehand
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone

Advice

Bespoke kitchens for homes in Puddle Dock

An island can be a good addition where there is space for one. We check there’s comfortable space on every side, because a cramped island makes a kitchen harder to work in. Where space is tight, a peninsula or a longer run may suit better. We make kitchens from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and people most often get in touch about making the most of a galley kitchen and a pantry cupboard with shelves and drawers.

In an area where interwar homes or semis make up much of the housing, as around Puddle Dock, kitchens often have a back door to the garden and a window over the sink. The cabinets and any larder or dresser are made for those walls. The worktop, sink and appliances you choose are built in, with plumbing and electrics left to your plumber and electrician.

The furniture is built in our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Puddle Dock homes and bespoke kitchens

About 80% of the homes in the area around Puddle Dock went up between 1945 and 1972, and about 11% between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Puddle Dock include Franks Farmhouse (Grade II), less than half a mile north-west. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for instance removing original joinery or fixing into it, can need listed building consent from the council. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. All of London, Havering included, is inside the ULEZ. So any van that delivers or fits furniture in Puddle Dock is covered by it. We plan parking and access with you at the measuring visit.

For a family home near The James Oglethorpe Primary School, planning a kitchen around family routines, with a place for school things, pays off. If your home is one of the older houses near Moor Lane Church, a narrow back addition or an old chimney breast may shape the kitchen layout.

Before and after fitting day

These points come up often when people plan bespoke kitchens. They’re worth knowing before and after fitting:

  • Check stairs, hallways and lifts for access
  • Know your appliance sizes early
  • Tell us about parking at the design visit
  • Make sure walls are dry before cabinets go in

Let steam escape when you cook, as steam settling on cabinets over time is not good for any finish. Ventilation helps the whole kitchen.

If you live in a leasehold flat, check your lease before changing the kitchen. Your lease is something to check with whoever manages the building.

What affects the cost of bespoke kitchens

We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. These are the things that affect it:

  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • The number of doors and drawers
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square

There’s no price list, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a quote in writing. To arrange a design visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Helping us understand the room

There is no need for exact sizes or plans. It’s enough to send:

  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Examples of the look you are after

If you know what you want, say so; if you don’t, that is fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we have measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Why people ask for bespoke kitchens in Puddle Dock

Older kitchens often lack storage. A larder or tall units can change how much you can store than a row of standard wall units.

Typical reasons people contact us include:

  • A larder for food and small appliances
  • A central island in a larger kitchen
  • A layout for a small or tricky room
  • A painted dresser for the kitchen

If you live in a flat close to Upminster station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote
  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • A written quote that sets out the job
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?

Questions from Puddle Dock

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Upminster station?

Yes, homes across Havering and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with some details about the room.

Can you make bespoke kitchens for a home in Puddle Dock?

Yes. Puddle Dock is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Havering and London. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with some details.

Will a bespoke kitchen suit my uneven floor?

Yes, that’s part of the job. Few walls in a period house are straight, so every cabinet is scribed and levelled.

Do you do the plumbing and electrics?

No, those are jobs for other trades. Plumbing, gas and electrics are for your plumber, a Gas Safe engineer and your electrician, and we fit the cabinets.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You do. We agree the colour with you.

What are the kitchen cabinets made of?

We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray painting or hand painting. Your quote sets out the materials and finish.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Tell us about it when you get in touch.

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind.
