Bespoke kitchens in Romford: what you get

Some kitchens suit a dresser, with cupboards below and open shelves above, and in a period house it can look as if it has always been there. Each dresser is made for its wall and finished to match the rest of the kitchen. We make kitchens from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are room for everything in the kitchen and a kitchen planned around your appliances.

With interwar houses or semis a big part of the picture around Romford, many kitchens have a garden door and a window that shape the layout. Cabinets, a larder and a dresser can be made to suit the layout. Your chosen worktop, sink and appliances are fitted into the design.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

How it is made

Larder and dresser units

We build larders with shelves, drawers and door racks, sized to what you store.

Spray-painted finish

Spray painting suits a kitchen that should look crisp, and it is done before fitting.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Tell us about them at the measuring visit.

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, and that’s best sorted before fitting day. We can’t advise on your lease.

Questions from Romford

Will a conservation area stop me having bespoke kitchens fitted in Romford?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Is Romford in the area you cover for bespoke kitchens?

Yes. We cover all of Havering and the rest of London, and Romford is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, followed by a quote.

How long does fitting take?

The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the kitchen and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. We’ll talk it through at the design visit.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.

What happens at the design visit?

It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.

What finishes do you offer?

There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.

Kitchens in Romford: local notes

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 32% of the housing in the area around Romford, with about 30% built since 2000, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The centre of Romford is within about a quarter of a mile of the Romford Conservation Area. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house does not normally need permission. If you are unsure, check with the council before work starts. Red routes are run by TfL, with tight limits on where and when vehicles can stop. If you live on or close to a main road in Romford, let us know at the measuring visit. That way we can plan where to load and unload.

If your home is one of the older houses near Parish Church of St Edward the Confessor, a narrow back addition or an old chimney breast may shape the kitchen layout. Hare Hall, about 1.4 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings can take larder cupboards right up to the top.

Is it time for bespoke kitchens?

Flats with awkward kitchen walls are another reason. Bespoke cabinets can make the most of a small or odd-shaped room without wasting space.

These come up often when people first get in touch:

  • Cabinets built around the appliances you choose
  • Making the most of a galley kitchen
  • A painted dresser for the kitchen
  • A painted kitchen in a colour you choose

If you live in a flat close to Romford station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

What to check before you book

  • Will the quote be in writing?
  • How parking will work on your street
  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted

Fitting day, step by step

There isn’t much for you to do on fitting day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it is useful to have the room cleared beforehand. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long fitting takes depends on the kitchen’s size and how many other trades are involved, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. It’s useful to clear the room and the route before we arrive. Fitting day starts with protecting the floors and setting out the pieces. The pieces are levelled, fitted to the walls and fixed back.

  1. We start with how you use the kitchen and what is not working. It is useful to know the worktop, sink and appliances you have in mind.
  2. We visit, measure the walls, floor and ceiling, and go through the design, including where the sink and appliances will go.
  3. A written quote follows, covering the cabinets, materials and finish.
  4. The cabinets, doors and drawer fronts are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the kitchen in your home, while your plumber, an engineer on the Gas Safe Register and your electrician handle the plumbing, gas and electrics. We don’t arrange those trades, so it’s useful to book them early.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings

How to get a quote

If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.
