How we make bespoke kitchens for Plumstead

A dresser brings a traditional feel to a kitchen, and in a period house it can look as if it has always been there. Each dresser is made for its wall and finished to match the rest of the kitchen. We make kitchens from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are open shelves with cupboards below and cabinets built around the appliances you choose.

The inside of a kitchen matters as much as the doors. Whatever your kitchen in Plumstead is like, the design visit starts with how you cook. Drawers for pans, a tall larder and a place for the bin are worth planning from the start. Cabinets are made from moisture-resistant MDF or birch plywood.

Everything we agree at the measuring visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If something is not quite right, tell us before anything is made.

When is bespoke worth it?

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

What it costs

The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. That depends on:

  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • The width and height of the space
  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • How many doors and drawers there are

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, and the quote follows.

Getting in touch

When you contact us, these help most:

  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, along with rough measurements. To send them over, get in touch through our contact form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

The problems bespoke kitchens solve

A common reason is a room that ready-made units don’t fit. Standard units are made in fixed sizes, and the gaps get filled with panels. Bespoke cabinets are built to the real sizes from the start.

Common reasons to get in touch include:

  • A kitchen for a room that is not square
  • Cabinets built around the appliances you choose
  • More storage in a small kitchen
  • A painted kitchen in a colour you choose

Danson House, about 2.7 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings can take larder cupboards right up to the top.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Whether you will get a written quote, not just a figure
  • Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber

Questions we are often asked

How do you fit bespoke kitchens in a flat in Plumstead?

At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Do I choose the paint colour?

The choice is yours, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you’ve chosen.

How are bespoke kitchens priced?

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. The size of the room, the number of units and the finish all make a difference. For a design visit, use our contact form.

How much time does fitting need?

The time the fitting takes depends on the kitchen’s size and how many other trades are involved, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two ways to finish it: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

Fitting day, step by step

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, which keeps the lines straight. After that, it is fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that’s solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. For a flat, building rules and lift booking are worth checking early; for a house, steps, paths and parking are the things to mention. Either way, the day is planned during the design visit. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. It starts with a short note from you about the room.
  2. We visit to plan the layout and check how the cabinets will get into the room.
  3. A written quote follows, covering the cabinets, materials and finish.
  4. In our workshop we build the kitchen from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in pieces that suit the route in.
  5. We carry everything in and fit the cabinets, while your plumber, a Gas Safe engineer and your electrician do the plumbing, gas and electrics.

Preparing the room

  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way

Getting a quote

Getting a quote starts with some details: the room, rough measurements and some photos if you have them. When you are ready, fill in our short enquiry form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and go through the design, then send a written quote.

Kitchens in Plumstead: local notes

About 39% of the homes in the area around Plumstead went up before 1919, and about 29% since 2000, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Plumstead is partly covered by a conservation area, according to Historic England’s records. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house does not normally need permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. Since the zone was extended to the outer boroughs in August 2023, the whole of London has been inside the ULEZ. That includes the vans that bring and fit furniture in Plumstead. We go through parking and access at the design visit.

Near listed buildings like The Old Vicarage, under half a mile south-west of the centre of Plumstead, older homes may keep original joinery that kitchens can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. For a flat near Plumstead station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

Flats, leases and landlords

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the design visit, so fitting day is planned around them.

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways along with the room itself, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.
