Where other trades come in

Some parts of a job need another trade, such as an electrician, a plumber or an engineer on the Gas Safe Register. Here is what to bear in mind:

  • Any work on the gas supply
  • Plastering, tiling or decorating
  • Moving water or waste pipes

If in doubt, you can message us from the contact page and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How it works.

What goes into it

  • Larders and dressers
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Islands where space allows
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Spray-painted finish

Bespoke kitchens in Shooter's Hill

Kitchens in period houses bring their own challenges. Few walls are flat, and floors often fall away from the walls, which shows up quickly along a run of cabinets. Each cabinet is trimmed to the wall and levelled on a plinth or adjustable feet, so the worktop you choose can sit level. We make kitchens from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are cabinets that suit lean and sloping walls and cabinets for a narrow kitchen.

In an area where interwar homes or semis make up much of the housing, as around Shooter's Hill, many kitchens have a garden door and a window that shape the layout. The cabinets and any larder or dresser are made for those walls. The worktop, sink and appliances you choose are built in, with plumbing and electrics left to your plumber and electrician.

The written quote is your record of the job. It sets out the kitchen designed for your room, what it’s made from and how it’s finished.

Why people ask for bespoke kitchens in Shooter's Hill

An extension or a knocked-through room is a common starting point. A new layout deserves a kitchen designed for it. The building work itself is for your builder.

Here’s what bespoke kitchens can help with:

  • More storage in a small kitchen
  • Cabinets built around the appliances you choose
  • A painted dresser for the kitchen
  • A central island in a larger kitchen

If you live near Eaglesfield Park, a cupboard by the back door for boots and coats can be built in with the kitchen.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?
  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

From workshop to your room

With the carcasses fixed and level, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly. How long fitting takes depends on the kitchen’s size and how many other trades are involved, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In a 1930s house with a converted loft, the stairs to the loft room are often steeper than the main flight, so any section going up there is sized for them. Elsewhere in the house, the route is typically more generous. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the room and how you cook.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and go through the layout, storage and finish, including where the sink and appliances will go.
  3. We send a quote that sets out the design, materials and finish, for you to read through.
  4. We build and finish the kitchen in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The kitchen is fitted in your home, and your plumber, electrician and a Gas Safe engineer do the plumbing, electrics and gas. We don’t arrange those trades, so it helps to book them early.

Preparing the room

  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Empty the space we will be working in
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through

Starting with a design visit

It helps to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space. To share them, fill in our short enquiry form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

Questions we are often asked

Is Shooter's Hill in the area you cover for bespoke kitchens?

Yes. Shooter's Hill is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Greenwich and London. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Do pictures help?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a quote in writing.

Will a bespoke kitchen suit my uneven floor?

Yes, that is part of the job. Few walls in a period house are straight, so we scribe and level every cabinet.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. We choose fixings to suit the wall.

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, as it makes good use of an tricky room. It is made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, finished by spray or by hand.

Bespoke kitchens for homes in Shooter's Hill

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Shooter's Hill were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 53%) and before 1919 (about 27%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Shooter's Hill is partly covered by a conservation area, according to Historic England’s records. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Your council can advise if you’re unsure. The ULEZ, run by TfL, takes in all of London, so Greenwich is inside it. Vans bringing furniture to Shooter's Hill fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. How the van gets to your door is planned at the measuring visit.

Eltham Palace, about 1.7 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, cabinets will be scribed to walls and floors that are rarely true. For a family home near Shooters Hill Sixth Form College, a tall cupboard by the door can take school bags and coats as part of the kitchen.
