Bespoke kitchens in Avery Hill, Greenwich

Thinking about bespoke kitchens in Avery Hill? It starts with a design visit to measure and talk through ideas, then a quote in writing, before anything is made.

How we make bespoke kitchens for Avery Hill

Moisture-resistant MDF suits kitchens well, because it copes with a room that gets steamy. Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well. The finish is spray painted in our workshop or hand painted, in colours agreed with you. If you are living with a central island in a larger kitchen and open shelves with cupboards below, kitchens made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

A good part of the housing around Avery Hill is interwar, semi-detached or detached. Many 1930s houses started with a small kitchen at the back that has since been extended or knocked through. The cabinets are designed for the room as it is today.

Where other trades are needed, for example an electrician to move a socket, we point that out. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

When is bespoke worth it?

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it is quick to buy.

Made-to-measure kitchens or ready-made?

Ready-made units are made to fixed sizes, so most layouts end in a filler panel. Ours are made to fit the room from wall to wall. Ready-made units come in standard depths that rarely suit every space, so they can stick out too far or waste space behind. Fitted furniture is made to the depth the space can take.

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside.

Common questions about bespoke kitchens

Does a conservation area in or near Avery Hill affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Can you make bespoke kitchens for a home in Avery Hill?

Yes, we work across Greenwich, Avery Hill included, and across the rest of London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.

What happens when you come to measure?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too.

Which worktops and appliances can I have?

You choose the worktop, sink and appliances, and we design the cabinets around them. Your quote sets out what’s included.

Will a bespoke kitchen suit my uneven floor?

Yes, that is part of the job. Walls in older homes are rarely flat and floors often slope, so we scribe and level every cabinet.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps. If there’s damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

Flats, conversions and lettings

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of.

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so tell us about it during the design visit.

Avery Hill homes and bespoke kitchens

In the neighbourhood around Avery Hill, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 52%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 25%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for kitchens, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Near the centre of Avery Hill, Historic England’s list includes Avery Hill Training College (main Doorway (Grade II), under half a mile south, and Church of Holy Trinity (Grade II), about 0.5 miles south-west. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. In inner London, a large part of the street parking sits inside borough-run controlled parking zones. That usually means a van in Avery Hill needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council. We ask about parking during the design visit, so the van can be planned for.

Close to Shoulder of Mutton Green? A tall cupboard for outdoor things can be part of the kitchen design. If your children go to Stationers' Crown Woods Academy or a school nearby, a kitchen with a spot for school letters and lunch boxes makes mornings easier. The wider area includes historic houses like Eltham Palace, about 1.2 miles west. For a period home anywhere nearby, a narrow back addition or an old chimney breast may shape the kitchen layout.

Fitting day, step by step

With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, and then we check it all again. How long fitting takes depends on how many units there are and how the room is laid out, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Some interwar and suburban streets have driveways, which can make unloading easier, so let us know at the design visit. Otherwise, a visitor permit or a nearby bay helps. Doorways, stairs and floors are covered on the way in.

  1. You get in touch with some details about the kitchen.
  2. The design visit covers measuring and planning the layout.
  3. You receive a quote in writing, setting out the cabinets, materials and finish.
  4. The kitchen is made at our workshop.
  5. The cabinets are fitted in your home, with plumbing, gas and electrics by your plumber, an engineer on the Gas Safe Register and your electrician. It helps to have those trades booked in good time.

Preparing the room
