Eltham Bespoke Kitchens
Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on bespoke kitchens in Eltham starts with a design visit, and everything is built in our workshop.
- An island where space allows
- Cabinets for a narrow kitchen
- A pantry cupboard with shelves and drawers

Bespoke kitchens in Eltham: what you get
Kitchens in period houses bring their own challenges. Few walls are flat, and floors often fall away from the walls, which shows up quickly along a run of cabinets. We scribe the cabinets to the walls and set them level on adjustable feet or a plinth giving a level line for the worktop you choose. We make kitchens from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a kitchen for a room that isn’t square and a pantry cupboard with shelves and drawers.
A good share of the homes around Eltham were built between 1945 and the early 1970s. Post-war kitchens tend to be simple rectangles, often on the small side, so cabinets made to the exact width of the room make the most of it. Walls may be concrete, block or brick, so fixings are chosen for the wall.
You get the quote in writing, so there’s time to read it properly. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Fitting day, step by step
There isn’t much for you to do on fitting day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and the room should already be cleared. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long the fitting takes depends on how many units there are and how the room is laid out, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Post-war houses tend to have straightforward halls and stairs, so carrying in is rarely difficult. The way in is still measured, along with the room. On the day, sections are joined, levelled and fixed, with floors protected throughout.
- You get in touch and tell us about the room and how you cook.
- At the design visit we measure up and plan the cabinets around the worktop, sink and appliances you choose.
- A quote in writing follows for the cabinets, materials and finish. Plumbing, gas and electrics aren’t part of it: those are for your plumber, an engineer on the Gas Safe Register and your electrician.
- We build the cabinets, doors and drawer fronts in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit the cabinets in your home, working around your plumber, your electrician and a Gas Safe engineer.
How to prepare
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician beforehand
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
Arranging a design visit
To make a start, send us a few details through our contact form and let us know which room you have in mind. We then arrange a design visit to measure and discuss the design, and a quote in writing follows.

Kitchens in Eltham: local notes
About 40% of the homes in the streets around Eltham went up between 1945 and 1972, and about 28% between 1919 and 1939, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). That matters for kitchens, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Part of Eltham is in a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. About 43% of households in the area around Eltham live in purpose-built flats, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.
For a flat near Mottingham station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. Eltham Palace, about 0.4 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, a narrow back addition or an old chimney breast may shape the kitchen layout.
Eltham is about 3 miles north of Plumstead, within the Royal Borough of Greenwich. Eltham is part of the area we cover, and the process is the same everywhere we work. Eltham is one of the places in Greenwich where we make bespoke kitchens, and the borough has 18 places on our list.
In SE9, SE12, DA15 and BR7, the process is the same as anywhere else in London. You will find streets here such as Eltham High Street, Tarnwood Park and Elmslie Court, and homes on each of them are within our area for bespoke kitchens. The A20 and B263 runs close to Eltham, so if your home is on a main road, mention it when you get in touch. If you are just outside Eltham, we also cover Middle Park (1 mile west), New Eltham (1 mile south-east), Well Hall (1 mile north), Coldharbour (1 mile south) and Avery Hill (1 mile north-east). We also make bespoke kitchens in nearby places such as Plumstead (3 miles north), Greenwich (3 miles north-west), Woolwich (3 miles north), Westcombe Park (3 miles north-west), Maze Hill (3 miles north-west) and Charlton (3 miles north). Eltham is among the bigger places we cover in Greenwich.

Tips worth knowing
Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it is worth looking after. A few pointers help:
- Line up your plumber, electrician and Gas Safe registered engineer early
- Have damp sorted before fitting
- Think about how you cook and what you store
- Know your appliance sizes early
Let steam escape when you cook, as steam settling on cabinets over time is not good for any finish. Ventilation helps the whole kitchen.
It helps to know which appliances you want early. We size the spaces around them, and changing them later can mean changing the units.
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Standard cabinets come in set widths, so most layouts end in a filler panel. Bespoke cabinets are made to the room’s real sizes, so the runs can fill the space properly. Several standalone pieces of different sizes can make a plain room look busy, while one fitted run looks calm and uses the space better. It can be painted to suit the room.
There’s no price list, because each job is designed for a single room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a quote in writing, with the materials and finish set out. To start, drop us a line using the contact form.

Questions we are often asked
Does a conservation area in or near Eltham affect fitted furniture?
Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Is Eltham in the area you cover for bespoke kitchens?
Yes, we work across Greenwich, Eltham included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with a few details.
What happens at the design visit?
We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and discuss the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too.
What finishes do you offer?
There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.
Do you handle the gas and electrics for the kitchen?
No. We are carpenters, so we make and fit the cabinets. Plumbing is done by your plumber, gas by a Gas Safe registered engineer and electrics by your electrician, and we plan the cabinets around their work.
What does a bespoke kitchen cost?
Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Every kitchen is different, so we quote once we have measured. To get started, get in touch through our contact form.
What prompts bespoke kitchens in Eltham
Kitchens in older homes can be short on cupboard space. Larders, tall cupboards and deep drawers can hold much more than a row of standard wall units.
Common reasons to get in touch include:
- Open shelves with cupboards below
- A larder for food and small appliances
- Making the most of a galley kitchen
- Spray-painted or hand-painted cabinets
If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Eltham Lodge, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
- How doors and drawers are fitted
- Will they visit to measure before quoting?
- Whether the finish is set out in the quote
Flats, blocks and rented homes
In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Let us know about it when you contact us.
Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the design visit.
