Walk-in wardrobes in North Harrow, Harrow

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. We make walk-in wardrobes for homes in North Harrow, each designed at a visit to your home.

Beyond the hanging, drawers, shelves and shoe storage do a lot of the work. Folded knitwear sits well on shelves, smaller things go in drawers and shoes can have racks or shelves of their own. A dressing table with a mirror can be built in where there’s space. Most enquiries start with long and double hanging planned around your clothes and separate space for two people’s clothes; the furniture is made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

A bedroom in a house from between the wars usually has simpler mouldings than a Victorian one, which makes it simple to take fitted furniture up to the ceiling. Around North Harrow, where interwar homes, semis and detached houses are a big part of the housing, the top cupboards can hold suitcases and spare bedding. Skirting boards are cut around neatly.

The quote comes in writing, so you can read it at your own pace. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Walk-in wardrobes for homes in North Harrow

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 54% of the housing in the neighbourhood around North Harrow, with about 23% built before 1919, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Near the centre of North Harrow, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Alban (Grade II), under half a mile south-west, and The Rayners Public House (Grade II), about 0.5 miles south-west. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features such as panelling can need listed building consent. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. About 54% of homes in the streets around North Harrow date from between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Houses from that era often have a box room over the stairs, with a raised bulkhead in the floor, which suits fitted storage made around its bulkhead.

For a flat near Harrow-on-the-Hill station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. For a family home near Longfield Primary School, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else. The wider area includes historic houses like Headstone Manor, about 0.8 miles north-east. For a period home anywhere nearby, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind walk-in wardrobes is part of the design.

North Harrow is about 1 mile south-east of Harrow, within the London Borough of Harrow. Whether your home in North Harrow is a terraced house, a flat or a newer build, the furniture is designed around the room as we find it. We list North Harrow among 20 places we cover in Harrow.

What we don’t do

We design, make and fit the furniture. In practice, that means:

  • Damp treatment or repairs
  • Building work to create the room
  • New lights or sockets

If in doubt, you can get in touch through our contact form and describe the room. How it works.

What goes into it

  • Hanging, shelves and drawers
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Shoe storage
  • Birch plywood
  • Dressing table
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Hand-painted finish

How fitting works for walk-in wardrobes

Getting everything level comes first. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference. After that, it is fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that is solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Some interwar and suburban streets have driveways, which can make unloading easier, so let us know at the measuring visit. Otherwise, details of permits or nearby bays help. Floors and doorways are protected while the pieces come in.

  1. To begin, drop us a line using the contact form; a brief note on the room and what it needs to store is plenty.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and plan hanging lengths, shelves, drawers and shoe storage with you.
  3. A written quote follows, setting out the layout, materials and finish.
  4. The units are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The walk-in wardrobe is fitted, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the inside fittings go in last.

Preparing the room

  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone

Advice

When is bespoke worth it?

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths.

Boards, parts and paint

Birch plywood

Shelves that carry piles of clothes need a strong board, and birch plywood suits them.

Shelves

Shoe shelves can be angled or flat planned around your shoes.

Questions we are often asked

Is North Harrow in the area you cover for walk-in wardrobes?

Yes. North Harrow is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Harrow and London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in North Harrow?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.

What does a walk-in wardrobe cost?

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Size, fittings and finish all affect the price. To arrange a design visit, message us from the contact page.

Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?

Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.

Can a box room become a walk-in wardrobe?

In many cases, yes. The layout depends on the room, the door and the window, so we work it out when we measure.

Is ventilation important in a dressing room?

Yes. Air needs to circulate around stored clothes, especially on an external wall, which can be colder and damper. The units are designed with ventilation in mind.

Flats, conversions and lettings

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, once we have measured the way in.

Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, after checking the walls at the design visit.
