Bespoke kitchens in Shirley, Croydon

In Shirley, we design bespoke kitchens around the room you actually have. We design your kitchen at a visit to your home, make it in our workshop and fit it.

  • A layout for a small or tricky room
  • A kitchen planned around your appliances
  • A central island in a larger kitchen

Bespoke kitchens designed for your room

Is it time for bespoke kitchens?

Kitchens in older homes can be short on cupboard space. A larder or tall units can change how much you can store without crowding the room.

Common reasons to get in touch include:

  • A layout for a small or tricky room
  • A kitchen for a room that isn’t square
  • An island where space allows
  • A dresser that suits a period house

For families living near Oasis Academy Shirley Park, a drawer set aside for lunch boxes and water bottles keeps mornings calmer.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
  • A written quote that sets out the job
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?

About our bespoke kitchens in Shirley

An island can be a good addition where there is space for one. We check there’s comfortable space on every side, and in a narrow kitchen an island can make the room harder to use. Where space is tight, a peninsula or a longer run may suit better. Most enquiries start with spaces sized for your oven and fridge and tall larder storage; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

If you live in one of the interwar houses or semis around Shirley, walls tend to be truer than in older houses, though nothing is assumed. Each cabinet is levelled and scribed on site. Other trades do the gas, plumbing and electrics.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Bespoke kitchens for homes in Shirley

About 49% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Shirley went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 17% between 1973 and 1999, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Since the zone was extended to the outer boroughs in August 2023, the whole of London has been inside the ULEZ. It applies to the vans that deliver and fit furniture in Shirley, as it does anywhere else in London. How the van gets to your door is planned at the design visit. Detached and semi-detached houses are home to about 60% of households in the area around Shirley, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. A house like that typically has more rooms to plan around than a flat, and sometimes a driveway that makes unloading easier.

If you live in a flat close to Elmers End station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. The wider area includes historic houses like Addington Palace, about 1.7 miles south. If your own home is a period one, a narrow back addition or an old chimney breast may shape the kitchen layout.

Shirley is in the London Borough of Croydon, about 3 miles north-west of Thornton Heath. Design visits and fitting in Shirley can be on a Saturday, by prior arrangement. Shirley is one of the places in Croydon where we make bespoke kitchens.

Every home in CR0, SE25 and CR9 is within our area for bespoke kitchens, from the main roads to the quieter streets. You will find streets here such as Poppy Lane, Homer Road and Craven Road, and we cover homes on all of them for bespoke kitchens. Shirley sits close to the A232. If your home is on one of them, tell us during the design visit, as some main roads have strict stopping rules. Close by, we also work in Monks Orchard (1 mile north), Shirley Oaks (1 mile west), Addiscombe (1 mile west), Ashburton (1 mile north-west) and Woodside (1 mile north-west). Across the rest of Croydon, our area takes in Thornton Heath (3 miles north-west), Croydon (2 miles south-west), Coulsdon (6 miles south-west), Purley (4 miles south-west), Broad Green (2 miles west) and Upper Norwood (3 miles north-west).

What we do not do

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:

  • Connecting sinks, taps and dishwashers
  • Plastering, tiling or decorating
  • Gas work, which is for an engineer on the Gas Safe Register

Not sure whether your space suits bespoke kitchens? You can send us a few details through our contact form and we will tell you. How it works.

What it is made from

  • Birch plywood
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Islands where space allows
  • Larders and dressers
  • Hand-painted finish

How it’s made

Moisture-resistant MDF

A painted MDF door looks crisp and even, in a kitchen as anywhere.

Larder and dresser units

We build larders with shelves, drawers and door racks, made to the space.

Before and after fitting day

Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it is worth looking after. A few pointers help:

  • List what needs a home in the kitchen
  • Measure the route into the kitchen
  • Deal with damp walls first
  • Know your appliance sizes early

Doors are hung and adjusted when we fit them. Walls and floors shift slightly through the year, so hinges allow small adjustments later.

Leasehold flats can have rules about alterations, so check your lease early. We can’t advise on your lease.

Fitting day, step by step

The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that’s what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. In a 1920s or 1930s house, the hall and stairs are usually straightforward, though we still measure the route in not just the room. The furniture comes in sections and is put together where it’s going.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about the room and how you cook.
  2. We visit to measure the room and go through the layout, the storage and where the appliances will sit.
  3. You receive a written quote for the kitchen cabinets.
  4. We build the cabinets, doors and drawer fronts in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the cabinets in your home, working around your plumber, your electrician and a Gas Safe registered engineer.

How to prepare

  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to

Ask for a quote

The quote is built from the design visit. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and discuss the design with you. A written quote follows the visit for you to look over. To book one, fill in our short enquiry form.
