Fitted Wardrobes in Shirley

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on fitted wardrobes in Shirley starts with a design visit, and everything is built in our workshop.

  • Condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall
  • Wasted space beside the chimney breast
  • Gaps above and around standalone wardrobes

Before and after fitting day

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after with a little care. These habits help most:

  • Let us know which walls face outside
  • Clear the wall where the wardrobes will go before fitting day
  • Work out the split between long and short hanging
  • Have sockets moved before the wardrobes go in

If you have sliding doors, keep the bottom track clear of dust and fluff. Don’t let shoes or bags sit in the track.

Spread heavy items rather than piling them in one place. Shelves and rails are sized for everyday loads, so mention anything unusually heavy when we plan.

How we make fitted wardrobes for Shirley

Fitted wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. The doors are finished with spray paint in the workshop or painted by hand, in the colour you choose. Then we fit them in your home, levelling them on a plinth or adjustable feet. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are musty smells in a wardrobe on a cold wall and a tight bedroom where doors get in the way.

If you live in one of the interwar houses or semis around Shirley, the spare room may be the small one at the front, over the hall and stairs. That is where fitted wardrobes earn their place, making a small room work as a dressing room, a guest room or both. Nothing is assumed: the room is measured wall by wall.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Fitting day, step by step

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and fitting day is where that happens. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. It helps to clear the room and the route before we arrive. Fitting day starts with protecting the floors and setting out the pieces. Each piece is levelled, scribed where the wall wanders and fixed to suit the wall.

  1. It starts when you tell us about the room, the floor it is on and the wardrobes you want.
  2. At the design visit we plan the wardrobes with you and check the route in, including any lift or tight stair turn. Let us know about parking as well, as a van usually needs a permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension in much of London.
  3. A written quote follows with the design, materials and finish.
  4. The wardrobes are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized for the route we measured.
  5. Fitting day: the sections come in, are joined and set level, and the doors are hung.

Starting with a design visit

If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. The design is talked through at the visit, once we have measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To arrange a visit, use our contact form.

The problems fitted wardrobes solve

The usual reason is simple: there is not enough storage. Clothes end up on chairs, in boxes under the bed or in another room. A fitted wardrobe uses the full height of the wall.

Common reasons to get in touch include:

  • Empty alcoves in the bedroom
  • Mismatched bedroom furniture
  • Damp or musty clothes against an external wall
  • A sloping ceiling that is hard to use

For a flat near Elmers End station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote
  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
  • Whether you will get a written quote, not just a figure
  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home

Questions from Shirley

Can you make fitted wardrobes for a home in Shirley?

Yes. We cover all of Croydon and the rest of London, and Shirley is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Elmers End station?

Yes, homes across Croydon and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by arrangement. Just mention it when you get in touch, and we’ll see what we can do.

Will a sloping floor cause problems for fitted wardrobes?

Floors in older houses are often out of level. The wardrobes are levelled on adjustable feet or a plinth and the doors line up.

Can you fit wardrobes in a top-floor flat?

We make the wardrobes in sections sized to the route into your home. We measure the stairs, landings and lift as well as the bedroom. In a leasehold flat, it’s worth checking the lease first.

Should I send pictures?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough sizes. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.

Could you do it yourself?

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it is quick to buy.

Boards, parts and paint

Plinths and scribe strips

A plinth raises the wardrobe off the floor and takes up any slope. It can line up with the skirting.

Spray-painted finish

Spraying coats edges and corners evenly for a smooth finish. You choose the colour before we start.
