Your questions about built-in bookshelves in Shirley

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Shirley?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.

Is Shirley in the area you cover for built-in bookshelves?

Yes, we work across Croydon, Shirley included, and across the rest of London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.

Do I need the building owner’s consent?

Possibly. It depends on your lease, and some require the building owner’s consent for alterations. We can’t give advice on your lease.

How do you get the furniture up the stairs?

Getting it in is planned at the design visit. The stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways are measured, and each section is made to a size that will get through.

Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?

Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You choose it. We agree the colour with you before anything is painted.

About our built-in bookshelves in Shirley

If a radiator sits where you’d like shelves, it’s worth planning carefully. The heat needs somewhere to go, so we don’t box a radiator in without leaving space or an opening for it. Often the simplest answer is to stop the shelves short of it, or ask their plumber about moving it. We make built-in bookshelves from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about shelving that works with picture rails and cornices and storage for children’s books and games.

Around Shirley, interwar houses or semi-detached and detached homes make up a good part of the housing. If yours is a 1920s or 1930s house, the front room may have a bay window at one end and a chimney breast on the side wall, and that layout shapes where built-in bookshelves work best. Walls are often truer than in older houses, but they’re still measured carefully and scribed where they wander.

A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It describes the built-in bookcase we’ve designed for the room, its materials and its finish, and the workshop works from it.

Looking after your furniture

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. Beyond that, these tips help:

  • Mention anything very heavy, such as records or large art books
  • Mention any radiator on the wall
  • Think about cupboards below for things you’d rather hide
  • Plan any sockets or wiring with your electrician before fitting

Dust shelves with a soft cloth. Avoid abrasive pads and strong sprays.

Keep any gap or opening above a radiator clear of books and objects. Heat needs to move into the room.

Is bespoke worth it?

Many flat-pack shelves are thin and long, so they bow once they’re full of books. We size each shelf for its span and load. Standard widths rarely add up to the length of a real wall, which fitted furniture avoids. It can also go up to the ceiling rather than stopping short.

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We will talk through what you need inside at the design visit, and the quote follows.

Living-room storage in Shirley

About 49% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Shirley went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 17% between 1973 and 1999, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Controlled parking zones are common across London, and Croydon sets its own rules. If parking near you is controlled, a visitor permit or a bay suspension may be needed, and the council arranges suspensions, often with notice. Parking near your home is worth mentioning at the design visit. More than a third of the homes in the streets around Shirley (about 49%) date from between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Houses from the 1920s and 1930s often have a bay window and a chimney breast in the front room, which shape where built-in bookshelves go.

Close to Ashburton Park? A room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone. The wider area includes historic houses like Addington Palace, about 1.7 miles south. For a period home anywhere nearby, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at. If you live in a period home close to St George The Martyr Church, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at.

Materials and finishes

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF gives crisp edges and smooth faces. We use the moisture-resistant grade for fitted work.

Shelves

Each shelf’s depth suits its job: shallow for paperbacks, deeper for art books and records.

When is bespoke worth it?

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Fitting day, step by step

You won’t need to do much on the day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it helps to have the room cleared beforehand. After that, it’s over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Some interwar and suburban streets have driveways, which can make unloading easier, so it’s worth mentioning at the measuring visit. Otherwise, a visitor permit or a nearby bay helps. Doorways, stairs and floors are covered on the way in.

  1. You contact us with a few details about the wall and your books. A rough idea of the wall and the books is plenty to start with.
  2. We visit to measure up, look at the wall and agree shelf depths and spacing.
  3. We send a written quote with the design, materials and finish, including spray or hand painting.
  4. We build the shelving in our workshop, sizing each shelf for what it carries. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. Fitting day: the bookcase goes in, is levelled and scribed, and fixed securely. Fixings are chosen to suit brick, plaster or stud walls.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
