Window seats in Shirley, Croydon

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on window seats in Shirley starts with a design visit, and everything is made in our workshop.

  • Needing more storage in the room
  • Looking for a reading spot by the window

Window seats in Shirley: local notes

About 49% of the homes in the streets around Shirley went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 17% between 1973 and 1999, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how window seats are fixed and fitted. Controlled parking zones are run by the boroughs, so the rules in Croydon are set locally. If your road in Shirley falls in a zone, the van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the design visit. Detached and semi-detached houses are home to about 60% of households in the streets around Shirley, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. In a semi or detached house, a driveway, where there is one, can make unloading easier.

Close to Ashburton Park? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and window seats can give those things a place. For an older house near St George The Martyr Church, the deep reveals of an older window can frame a seat neatly. Addington Palace, about 1.7 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, window seats can be scribed to follow a bay that’s rarely square.

About our window seats in Shirley

A seat under a bedroom or nursery window can store toys, bedding or books. Drawers or a lift-up lid turn it into storage as well as seating. Drawers can be easier than a lid for children to use. In Shirley, the design visit is where the details are settled. People usually come to us about a period room that needs furniture to suit it and wanting a quiet place to read; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Walls in houses from between the wars are normally straighter than in older ones, but seldom perfect. Much of the housing around Shirley is interwar, semi-detached or detached, so we still scribe every piece to the wall. Lids, doors and drawers are set level on site so they run true.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

What it is made from

Moisture-resistant MDF

We use moisture-resistant MDF because it’s stable and gives a smooth surface for paint. It suits the fronts, panels and grilles of a window seat. A moisture-resistant grade suits a spot where windows can gather condensation.

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting can be done on site once the seat is in. It’s easy to touch up if it gets marked. It suits a seat that sees daily use.

Could you do it yourself?

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, after measuring the route during the design visit.

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the measuring visit, so fitting day is planned around them.

What affects the price in Shirley

What you pay depends on:

  • Parking near your home
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • How big the furniture is
  • The internal fittings

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size comes first. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

What we need to know

You do not need exact measurements or a plan. Just send what you can:

  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres

If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

How fitting day works

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth. After that, it’s fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that is solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Interwar houses normally have a straight run of stairs and a reasonable hallway, though we still measure the route in along with the room itself. Window seats arrive in sections and are assembled in place.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the window, and whether a radiator sits beneath it.
  2. We visit to measure up and work out how warm air from the radiator will reach the room.
  3. Your written quote sets out the seat, the grille, the materials and the finish.
  4. We make the seat and grille in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The seat is fitted with the radiator grille in place, so the heat keeps moving.

Common questions about window seats

Can you make window seats for a home in Shirley?

Yes, we work across Croydon, Shirley included, and across the rest of London. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.

I live near Elmers End station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Croydon and the rest of London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Typically not. Inside a house, fitted furniture doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings can need listed building consent for works that affect their character.

Do you do the electrics?

No. We are carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design, and any new sockets are best done before fitting day.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

We need someone to let us in. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.
