Bespoke kitchens for homes in Teddington

A bespoke kitchen is built around the room you have. Each cabinet is made to the real measurements of your walls, floor and ceiling, so the runs fit neatly from wall to wall. The layout, storage and finish are planned with you, and the kitchen is built in our workshop before it’s fitted. We make kitchens from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and people most often get in touch about a kitchen island with room around it and spray-painted or hand-painted cabinets.

Around Teddington, a large share of homes date from before 1919, and in many Victorian and Edwardian terraces the kitchen sits in a narrow back addition. Cabinets are scribed to walls that wander and levelled on floors that slope. You choose the worktop, sink and appliances, and the cabinets are made around them.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

What it costs

The price for your room depends on:

  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

What we need to know

To help us picture the room, please include:

  • Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around

It’s useful to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, along with rough sizes. To share them, use our contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.

Questions from Teddington

Can you fit bespoke kitchens to the uneven walls of an older house in Teddington?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

I live near Teddington station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Richmond upon Thames and the rest of London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Do I need the building owner’s consent?

Possibly. A lease can require consent for alterations, including fixing furniture to the walls. Check your lease, as we cannot advise on it.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not normally. Inside a house, fitted furniture does not normally need planning permission. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first.

Can I send photos before the visit?

Yes, they help. Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space. You can send them when you drop us a line using the contact form.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

It needs a little planning: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We don’t treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

Teddington homes and bespoke kitchens

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Teddington were built before 1919 (about 46%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 17%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Teddington include Church of St Mary (Grade II*), under half a mile north-east, and Church of St Alban (Grade II*), less than half a mile east. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features like panelling can require listed building consent. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. Parking controls in London are set borough by borough, so Richmond upon Thames has its own. If your street in Teddington is in a controlled parking zone, a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay through the council may be needed. Parking near your home is worth mentioning at the measuring visit.

Living in a block of flats near Teddington station? Then kitchens are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. The wider area includes historic houses such as Strawberry Hill House, about 0.8 miles north. If your own home is a period one, cabinets will be scribed to walls and floors that are rarely true. If your children go to St Mary's and St Peter's Church of England Primary School or a school nearby, a drawer set aside for lunch boxes and water bottles keeps mornings calmer.

How it’s made

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting gives a softer, traditional look in an older home.

Birch plywood

Open shelves in a kitchen need to stay straight, and birch plywood helps.

From workshop to your room

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you. The time the fitting takes depends on how many units there are and how the room is laid out, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. If your hall still has its original tiles or boards, they’re covered before any carrying starts. Drilling into lath and plaster is done with care, so the plaster around stays sound. Any decorating around the new pieces is for your decorator.

  1. You contact us about a bespoke kitchen.
  2. We visit to measure and discuss the layout and the finish, spray-painted or hand-painted.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, the materials and the finish.
  4. The cabinets are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, and a spray finish is applied there for a smooth, even surface.
  5. The kitchen is fitted and scribed to the walls, with any hand painting done in the room.
  6. Plumbing, gas and electrics are for your plumber, a Gas Safe engineer and your electrician; new paintwork needs gentle use while it cures.

Advice

Could you do it yourself?

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Is bespoke worth it?

Ready-made cabinets often have chipboard carcasses. Ours are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then spray or hand painted, so the finish can be repainted later. Tall standalone furniture needs fixing back to the wall so it can’t tip, and older walls of brick or lath and plaster make that harder than it looks. With fitted pieces, the fixings are planned for the wall from the start.

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, and that’s part of the price. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured.
