The problems bespoke kitchens solve
A painted kitchen can be refreshed later, which suits a long-term home. Hand painting is simple to touch in or refresh over the years.
Bespoke kitchens can help with:
- Cabinets that suit lean and sloping walls
- Room for everything in the kitchen
- Spray-painted or hand-painted cabinets
- Making the most of a galley kitchen
For a flat near Hendon station, it is useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.
What to check before you book
- Is it spray painted or hand painted?
- How they handle walls that are not straight
- Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
- Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
Bespoke kitchens for homes in The Hyde
Many people want a tall larder for food, tins and small appliances. We can build larders with shelves, drawers or racks inside the doors, planned around what you store. In an alcove or at the end of a run, it can use space that would otherwise be wasted. If you’re living with a dresser that suits a period house and a central island in a larger kitchen, kitchens made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand can solve it.
A larger semi or detached house may have room for a utility area or boot room by the back door. Much of the housing around The Hyde is interwar, semi-detached or detached. Tall cupboards for the washing machine, coats and cleaning things can be made to match the kitchen. Plumbing for any appliance is for your plumber.
A written quote is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It sets out the kitchen designed for your room, what it’s made from and how it is finished.

What else we make in The Hyde
Could you do it yourself?
Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, and standard units leave gaps.
Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.
Is bespoke worth it?
Ready-made units are made to fixed sizes, so the room has to fit the units. Bespoke cabinets are made to the room’s real sizes from wall to wall. Ready-made furniture rarely suits a bay, a box room or a bulkhead over the stairs, and those are common in interwar houses. Fitted furniture is made around them.
Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension. It helps to talk about parking during the design visit.

Questions we’re often asked
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in The Hyde?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.
Do you make bespoke kitchens for homes in The Hyde?
Yes. The Hyde is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Barnet and London. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with a few details.
What if the wall is cold or damp?
An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps, which helps avoid condensation and mould. If there is damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.
How much time does fitting need?
It depends on the kitchen. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the kitchen and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote.
Can you come on a Saturday?
Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch, and we will see what we can do.
What happens at the design visit?
We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. We’ll also ask about access and parking.
How fitting works for bespoke kitchens
At the end, we tidy up and take up the floor coverings. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and explain how to look after the paint. How long fitting takes depends on how many units there are and how the room is laid out, and your quote sets out the fitting days. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturdays can be arranged.
- We start with how you cook and what the kitchen needs to hold. Larders, dressers and islands can all be part of it, where space allows.
- At the design visit we measure the walls, floor and ceiling and plan the layout.
- A quote follows, covering the design and finish, ready for you to check.
- We build and finish the kitchen in our workshop. The materials are moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- Fitting day: we fit the cabinets, and your plumber, electrician and a Gas Safe registered engineer handle the services.
Before we arrive
- Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
- Empty the space we will be working in

Advice
Kitchens in The Hyde: local notes
About 48% of the homes in the streets around The Hyde went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 26% since 2000, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Near the centre of The Hyde, Historic England’s list includes Church of the Holy Innocents (Grade II), under half a mile west, and Church of St John (Grade II), about 0.6 miles south-east. For a listed home, internal works that affect its character may need listed building consent from the council, for example removing or fixing into original panelling. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. A quarter or more of the homes in the neighbourhood around The Hyde (about 26%) were built since 2000, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Newer homes normally have open-plan kitchens with plasterboard walls, so the cabinet fixings are chosen for the board.
If you live in a period home close to St Matthias the Apostle church, cabinets will be scribed to walls and floors that are rarely true. Close to West Hendon Playing Fields? A cupboard by the back door for boots and coats can be built in with the kitchen.
