Questions we are often asked
Do you make wall beds for homes in The Hyde?
Yes, The Hyde is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Barnet and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, followed by a quote.
Will a conservation area stop me having wall beds fitted in The Hyde?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.
Who chooses the colour?
You choose it. We agree the colour with you.
Can a wall bed have storage around it?
Yes, and it’s one of the best ways to use the wall. A desk beside the bed suits a room that is an office by day, while new sockets are for your electrician.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, by prior arrangement. Let us know when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.
Should I send pictures?
Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit, along with rough sizes. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.
Wall beds for homes in The Hyde
Spare rooms in London homes are often small, and a bed that’s used a few times a year takes most of the floor. When the bed is folded away, the room is open again, ready for work, exercise or play. Guests still get a proper bed when they stay. Most enquiries start with more floor space in a studio flat and a bed that fills a little-used room; the furniture is made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
Bedrooms in interwar houses often have a picture rail but a plainer ceiling than a Victorian room, so fitted furniture can often run neatly to the ceiling. If yours is one of the interwar houses or semis that make up much of the housing around The Hyde, the top cupboards can hold suitcases and spare bedding. Skirting boards are cut around neatly.
The furniture is made in our workshop after you have had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

More for homes in The Hyde
From workshop to your room
Once the main sections are fixed in place, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, then checked again. How long fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturdays can be arranged.
- You get in touch and let us know about the room and the wall where the bed could go.
- At the design visit we check what the wall is made of, as a wall bed has to be fixed securely as its maker specifies.
- A written quote follows, covering the cabinet, the materials and the finish.
- We build the cabinet in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit the cabinet in your home and fix the mechanism as its maker specifies.
- We go through the bed with you; the cabinet has the spray-painted or hand-painted finish you chose.
Preparing the room
- Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
How to get a quote
It is useful to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space. To send them over, use our contact form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.
Advice
DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job.
The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t typically do that in an older room.
Boards, parts and paint
Birch plywood
We use birch plywood where strength matters, which matters for the parts that carry the bed. Its layered edge can be shown or painted.
Hand-painted finish
A hand-painted finish can be done on site, once it’s fitted. It’s easy to touch up later.
The problems wall beds solve
Some want a room that can change as the family does. A playroom, a study or a hobby room can still have a bed for visitors without giving up the floor.
Requests we hear often include:
- A spare room that is rarely slept in
- Storage built around a fold-down bed
- Room for a desk and a guest bed
- A living room with a bed that folds away
If you live in a flat close to Hendon station, wall beds are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.
What to check before you book
- How the furniture will be finished, and where
- Where they’ll park and unload
- Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?
- Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?

The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how wall beds are fixed and fitted. There’s a conservation area within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of The Hyde, going by Historic England’s data. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are mainly about the outside of buildings. A quarter or more of the homes in the streets around The Hyde (about 26%) were built since 2000, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Newer homes often have compact bedrooms with plasterboard stud walls, so fitted furniture is fixed to suit the board.
If you live near West Hendon Playing Fields, a bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls. Near listed buildings like Church of the Holy Innocents, less than half a mile west of the centre of The Hyde, older homes may keep original joinery that wall beds can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Before and after fitting day
A few practical points help before and after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:
- Consider how many people will sleep in it
- Check your lease if you live in a flat
- Lower and lift the bed steadily
- Check mattress size and weight limits
Whether bedding can stay on the bed when it folds up depends on the mechanism. We can build a cupboard beside the bed for extra bedding.
Let us know what the wall is made of if you know. Solid brick, stud walls and plasterboard need different fixings, and we check it at the design visit too.
