How we price bespoke kitchens
Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. What affects it comes down to:
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
- Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
- The number of doors and drawers
Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size comes first. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.
Before the design visit
Ahead of the design visit, we will usually ask about:
- Rough sizes: width, height and depth
- Any ideas or images you have saved
- Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
- How you want to use the space
The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and go through the design with you. A quote in writing follows the visit for you to look over. To arrange the visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.
How we make bespoke kitchens for West Dulwich
We often use moisture-resistant MDF in kitchens, because it stays stable and takes paint beautifully. For drawer boxes and shelves, birch plywood is a good choice. Cabinets are spray painted in the workshop or hand painted, in colours agreed with you. If you’re living with room for everything in the kitchen and a kitchen that fits an uneven room, kitchens made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.
The boiler in many post-war homes sits in the kitchen, on a wall or in a cupboard. Around West Dulwich, many homes come from the post-war decades, so the design often has to work around one. Any cabinet around a boiler keeps the clearances its maker asks for, and boiler work is for a Gas Safe registered engineer.
The furniture is built in our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

What happens on fitting day
With the carcasses fixed and level, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly. The time the fitting takes depends on how many units there are and how the room is laid out, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. In a post-war block of flats, the route in may include communal stairs, landings and a lift, so the furniture comes in sections that fit them. Let us know about any building rules on lifts or working hours during the design visit.
- You let us know about the kitchen and where it is in your home.
- At the design visit we measure the kitchen and the route in, including stairs, doorways and any lift.
- A written quote follows, covering the cabinets, materials and finish.
- In our workshop we build the kitchen from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in pieces that suit the route in.
- The cabinets are fitted in your home with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish; plumbing, gas and electrics are for your plumber, an engineer on the Gas Safe Register and your electrician.
How to prepare
- Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
Arranging a design visit
You don’t need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To get started, tell us about the room on our contact form. The written quote follows the visit.

Bespoke kitchens for homes in West Dulwich
In the area around West Dulwich, the largest groups of homes date from between 1945 and 1972 (about 38%) and before 1919 (about 28%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. That matters for kitchens, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. The centre of West Dulwich is within about a quarter of a mile of the Dulwich Village Conservation Area. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. Parking on many inner London streets is controlled, with zones run by each borough. That normally means a van in West Dulwich needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council. Parking is worth mentioning at the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.
If you live near Long Meadow, a tall cupboard for outdoor things can be part of the kitchen design. If you live in a flat close to Sydenham Hill station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. For families living near Dulwich Wood Primary School, a kitchen with a spot for school letters and lunch boxes makes mornings easier.

Tips worth knowing
New paint needs time to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. Beyond that, these tips help:
- Give the paint time to cure fully
- Think about how you cook and what you store
- Measure the route into the kitchen
- Mention any parking or lift rules
The appliances you’ve chosen come with their own care instructions, and the worktop you chose will have its own care advice too.
Have any damp sorted before the kitchen goes in. Damp behind units can lead to mould, particularly on a colder external wall.
Flats, conversions and leaseholders
Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the measuring visit.
In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.
When you need someone else
As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. It helps to know these before you plan the job:
- Connecting sinks, taps and dishwashers
- Building work, like removing walls
- Connecting a gas hob or cooker
If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can get in touch through our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How it works.

Your questions about bespoke kitchens in West Dulwich
My home in West Dulwich is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?
At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
Do you make bespoke kitchens for homes in West Dulwich?
Yes. We cover all of Southwark and the rest of London, and West Dulwich is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and discuss the design, followed by a quote.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, by prior arrangement. Let us know when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.
What materials do you use for kitchens?
MDF for smooth painted parts and birch plywood for drawer boxes and shelves. We spray paint in the workshop or hand paint, in colours you choose.
Can you build an island in my kitchen?
Yes, where there’s space. We measure at the design visit to check there’s room to walk round it and open doors. If it would crowd the kitchen, we will say so.
Can I choose my own worktop and appliances?
You choose the worktop, sink and appliances, and the cabinets are made to suit them. Your quote sets out what’s included.
