Bespoke kitchens for homes in West Norwood

Kitchens in period houses bring their own challenges. Few walls are flat, and floors often fall away from the walls, which shows up quickly along a run of cabinets. We scribe the cabinets to the walls and set them level on adjustable feet or a plinth, so the worktop you choose can sit level. Most enquiries start with spaces sized for your oven and fridge and a layout for a small or awkward room; the furniture is made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Where the sink, cooker and boiler can go often depends on where the pipes and power already are. For a kitchen in West Norwood, the layout is planned with the existing services in mind. Your plumber, electrician and a Gas Safe registered engineer do any moving.

Where other trades are needed, for instance an electrician to move a socket, we point that out. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Looking after your furniture

These points come up often when people plan bespoke kitchens. They help whatever the room:

  • Measure the route into the kitchen
  • Mention any parking or lift rules
  • Allow space to walk round an island
  • Choose your appliances before the design is final

Doors are hung and adjusted when we fit them. Houses move a little with the seasons, and hinges can be adjusted to keep the gaps even.

Measure the route into the kitchen not just the room. We make the cabinets in sections that fit through the doors and up the stairs, so let us know about tight turns or small lifts.

How fitting day works

Fitting day follows a set order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on the kitchen’s size and how many other trades are involved, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. London parking ranges from controlled zones to driveways and private bays, so let us know what’s near you at the measuring visit. For a flat, building rules on lifts and working hours are worth checking.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the room and how you cook.
  2. We visit to measure the room and go through the layout, the storage and where the appliances will sit.
  3. You receive a quote in writing for the kitchen cabinets.
  4. The cabinets are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the cabinets in your home, working around your plumber, your electrician and a Gas Safe engineer.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone

Getting a quote

If you know what you want, say so; if you do not, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

What bespoke kitchens cannot fix

Some parts of a job need another trade, like an electrician, a plumber or a Gas Safe engineer. Here’s what to know:

  • Connecting sinks, taps and dishwashers
  • Electrics, sockets and lighting (your electrician)
  • Gas work, which is for an engineer on the Gas Safe Register

If in doubt, you can drop us a line using the contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

What it’s made from

  • Larders and dressers
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Islands where space allows
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Moisture-resistant MDF

Kitchens in West Norwood: local notes

Homes built before 1919 make up about 38% of the housing in the neighbourhood around West Norwood, with about 27% built between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of West Norwood include Church of St Luke (Grade II*), about 0.5 miles north-west, and St Luke's Church of England Primary School (Grade II), less than half a mile west. If your own home is listed, changes inside that alter its character, like fixing into or removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. It’s worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. TfL’s Ultra Low Emission Zone covers every part of London, Lambeth included. Vans bringing furniture to West Norwood fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. Access and parking are talked through during the design visit.

Kingswood House, about 0.6 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, a narrow back addition or an old chimney breast may shape the kitchen layout. If you live near Long Meadow, a tall cupboard for outdoor things can be part of the kitchen design. If your children go to St Luke's Church of England Primary School or a school nearby, a tall cupboard by the door can take school bags and coats as part of the kitchen.

Questions from West Norwood

Does a conservation area in or near West Norwood affect fitted furniture?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Do you cover homes near West Norwood station?

Yes. We cover all of Lambeth and the rest of London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with some details about the room.

How much does a bespoke kitchen cost?

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Every kitchen is different, so we quote once we’ve measured. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You do. We agree the colour with you before anything is painted.

Do you handle the gas and electrics for the kitchen?

No, those are jobs for other trades. Plumbing, gas and electrics are for your plumber, an engineer on the Gas Safe Register and your electrician, and we fit the cabinets.

Is there room for an island in my kitchen?

Yes, where there’s space. At the design visit we check the clearances around it, and suggest another layout if it would crowd the room.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Ready-made units are made to fixed sizes, so most layouts end in a filler panel. Ours are made to fit the room, so the runs can fill the space properly. Standard widths and heights seldom suit an actual room, which leaves gaps at the sides and wasted space on top. Fitted furniture is made to the room.

There is no price list, because each job is designed for a single room. Instead, we measure, talk through the design and then quote in writing. To start, use our contact form.
