Bespoke kitchens for your home in Herne Hill
Is bespoke worth it?
Off-the-shelf kitchens are quicker to buy and typically cost less, and in a square modern room they can work well. In an older house with uneven walls, they tend to need filler panels and leave gaps. A bespoke kitchen costs more but is made for the room. Off-the-shelf furniture is made for flat walls and level floors, which older houses rarely have, so you end up with gaps, wobbles and units that do not meet the skirting. Fitted pieces follow the wall and sit level.
We don’t publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. Instead, we measure, discuss the design and then quote in writing. To arrange a design visit, use our contact form.

How we make bespoke kitchens for Herne Hill
Older London homes are rarely simple places to fit a kitchen. Few walls are flat, and floors often fall away from the walls, which shows up quickly along a run of cabinets. We scribe the cabinets to the walls and set them level on adjustable feet or a plinth, so the worktop you choose can sit level. People typically come to us about a pantry cupboard with shelves and drawers and a kitchen for a room that isn’t square; the furniture is made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
With a large share of homes around Herne Hill built before 1919, many kitchens still have a chimney breast, which can be built around rather than fought. A blocked chimney still needs ventilating, and any damp is sorted before cabinets go against it. Other trades handle the plumbing, gas and electrics.
A written quote follows the design visit. It sets out the design we have talked through, the materials and the finish.

How fitting day works
The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. In a period home, the furniture is fitted to walls that aren’t straight, so each piece is trimmed and adjusted on site. Floors are protected, and dust is kept down as far as possible. It helps to tell us about parking during the design visit, as terraced streets are often busy.
- You get in touch with some details about the kitchen. Say a little about the way you cook.
- The design visit covers measuring and planning the layout, where space allows.
- You receive a written quote, setting out the cabinets, materials and finish.
- The kitchen is built in our workshop.
- We fit the kitchen in your home, while your plumber, an engineer on the Gas Safe Register and your electrician do the plumbing, gas and electrics.
How to prepare
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway

Bespoke kitchens in Herne Hill: local notes
Homes built before 1919 make up about 59% of the housing in the streets around Herne Hill, with about 16% built between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how kitchens are fixed and fitted. The National Heritage List has 39 entries within half a mile of the centre of Herne Hill. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. Flats in converted or shared houses account for about 22% of households in the neighbourhood around Herne Hill, based on Census 2021. In a converted house, rooms can be odd shapes, with new partitions meeting old walls, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. A lease can require consent for alterations, so it is worth checking yours first.
Near listed buildings like Church of St Paul, less than half a mile west of the centre of Herne Hill, older homes may keep original joinery that kitchens can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. For an older house near Saint Faith's, cabinets will be scribed to walls and floors that are rarely true.
Herne Hill is part of the London Borough of Southwark, about 1 mile north-east of East Dulwich. We work across all London boroughs and the City of London, and Herne Hill is part of that. We list Herne Hill among 21 places we cover in Southwark.
In SE22, SW2 and SE24, the process is the same as anywhere else in London. Whether you live on a street such as Jelf Road, Dewey Lane and Talma Road or on one nearby, we can arrange a design visit for bespoke kitchens. Herne Hill is near the A204 and A2214, so if your home is on a main road, mention it when you get in touch. If you’re just outside Herne Hill, we also cover Dulwich Village (1 mile south-east), East Dulwich (1 mile north-east), Dulwich (1 mile south-east), Denmark Hill (1 mile north) and Camberwell (1 mile north). We also make bespoke kitchens in nearby places like Bermondsey (3 miles north), Elephant and Castle (3 miles north), Bankside (4 miles north), Southwark (3 miles north), St George's Fields (3 miles north) and Newington Butts (3 miles north). Being one of the larger places in Southwark, Herne Hill is covered for bespoke kitchens and everything else we make.

Could you do it yourself?
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.
It is worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture normally costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.
Your questions about bespoke kitchens in Herne Hill
My home in Herne Hill is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?
At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. Kitchens are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
Do you make bespoke kitchens for homes in Herne Hill?
Yes. Herne Hill is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Southwark and London. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with a few details.
How is the furniture painted?
There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.
What materials do you use for kitchens?
Our kitchens are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then spray painted or hand painted. Your quote sets out the materials and finish.
Will you connect the sink and appliances?
No, that work is for other trades. Your plumber connects the sink and dishwasher, a Gas Safe engineer handles any gas, and your electrician does the wiring, while we make and fit the cabinets.
Do I need to be in when you fit?
We need access, so someone has to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.
What we do not do
Some parts of a job need another trade, like an electrician, a plumber or an engineer on the Gas Safe Register. Here’s what to know:
- Knocking through or rebuilding walls
- New sockets or circuits
- Gas work, which is for a Gas Safe registered engineer
If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can get in touch through our contact form and we will give you a straight answer. Our process from visit to fitting.

Is it time for bespoke kitchens?
In many older homes, ready-made units struggle with lean and slope. Cabinets end up with gaps or tilted lines, while scribed and levelled cabinets keep the lines true.
Typical reasons people contact us include:
- A larder for food and small appliances
- A dresser that suits a period house
- Cabinets for a narrow kitchen
- Spaces sized for your oven and fridge
Kingswood House, about 1.7 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, tall ceilings can take larder cupboards right up to the top.
