Why people ask for bespoke kitchens in West Twyford

Uneven walls and floors make standard kitchens hard to fit. Cabinets end up with gaps or tilted lines, while scribed and levelled cabinets keep the lines true.

People normally get in touch with us about needs like these:

  • A kitchen island with room around it
  • A kitchen planned around your appliances
  • Room for everything in the kitchen
  • A painted dresser for the kitchen

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St Mary, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent.

  • Where they’ll park and unload

How to choose a carpenter in London

Moisture-resistant MDF suits kitchens well, because it stays stable and takes paint beautifully. For drawer boxes and shelves, birch plywood is a good choice. The finish is spray painted in our workshop or hand painted, in colours agreed with you. If you are living with a larder for food and small appliances and making the most of a galley kitchen, kitchens made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed can solve it.

Islands only work where there is room to walk round them. Interwar, semi-detached and detached homes make up a big part of the housing around West Twyford, and in an extended kitchen there may be space. The space around any island is measured at the measuring visit, along with where water and power would need to reach. Services to an island are for your plumber and electrician.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If something is not quite right, tell us before anything is made.

How fitting day works

On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. The sections made at our workshop come in next. The time the fitting takes depends on the kitchen’s size and how many other trades are involved, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand helps the day run well. On the day, we cover the floors first, then bring the sections in. Each piece is levelled, scribed where the wall wanders and fixed to suit the wall.

  1. It starts with a short note from you about the room.
  2. We visit to plan the layout and check how the cabinets will get into the room.
  3. A written quote follows, covering the cabinets, materials and finish.
  4. In our workshop we build the kitchen from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in pieces that suit the route in.
  5. We carry everything in and fit the cabinets, while your plumber, a Gas Safe registered engineer and your electrician do the plumbing, gas and electrics.

How to prepare

  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to

Questions we’re often asked

Do you make bespoke kitchens for homes in West Twyford?

Yes. We cover all of Ealing and the rest of London, and West Twyford is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

My home in West Twyford is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

How are bespoke kitchens priced?

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Every kitchen is different, so we price it after the design visit. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need it. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

Can I choose my own worktop and appliances?

The worktop, sink and appliances are the ones you choose, and we design the cabinets around them. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t typically do that in an older room.

Looking after your furniture

A little care keeps the finish looking good, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. These practical tips help:

  • Make sure walls are dry before cabinets go in
  • Line up your plumber, electrician and Gas Safe registered engineer early
  • Check stairs, hallways and lifts for access
  • Allow space to walk round an island

Do not leave water sitting on painted cabinets, especially around the sink and dishwasher. Moisture-resistant MDF copes well, but standing water is best avoided.

Line up your other trades in good time. Their work and ours need to fit together, so it helps if everyone knows the plan.

What it costs

Several things affect the price:

  • Parking near your home
  • Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • How square the room is
  • The number of doors and drawers

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We’ll talk through what you need inside during the design visit, and the quote follows.

Before the design visit

Some details help us understand the job before we visit. When you contact us, it helps to send:

  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on

To get a quote, send us a few details through our contact form and tell us a little about the room and roughly what you’d like. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and send you a written quote afterwards.
