How fitting day works

In older rooms, the furniture normally has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it sits neatly against the room. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the kitchen and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. It is useful to clear the room and the route before we arrive. Fitting day starts with protecting the floors and setting out the pieces. The pieces are levelled, fitted to the walls and fixed back.

  1. You let us know about the room and how you use it. Larders, dressers and islands can all be part of it, where space allows.
  2. At the design visit we measure the walls, floor and ceiling and plan the layout.
  3. We send a quote in writing setting out the cabinets, materials and finish, ready for you to check.
  4. The cabinets, doors and drawer fronts are made in our workshop. The materials are moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. Fitting day: we fit the cabinets, and your plumber, electrician and an engineer on the Gas Safe Register handle the services. We do not arrange these trades ourselves.

How we make bespoke kitchens for Alperton

Many people want a tall larder for food, tins and small appliances. A larder can have shelves, deep drawers and racks, planned around what you store. In an alcove or at the end of a run, it can use space that would otherwise be wasted. Typical reasons to get in touch are a painted dresser for the kitchen and a kitchen finished in your colours; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Where a back room and kitchen have been knocked together, a kitchen-diner may have a chimney breast at the dining end, and the recesses beside it can take a dresser or larder. Around Alperton, where interwar homes and semis are a big part of the housing, that is a feature worth designing around. A blocked chimney still needs ventilating, and damp is sorted first.

Our quotes are written in plain words. They say what will be made, what it is made from and how it will be finished, all taken from the design visit.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of.

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so let us know about it during the design visit.

Questions we are often asked

Do you make bespoke kitchens for homes in Alperton?

Yes, Alperton is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Brent and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and discuss the design, followed by a quote.

I live near Wembley Central station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Brent and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with a few details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

What materials do you use for kitchens?

Our kitchens are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then spray painted or hand painted. Your quote sets out the materials and finish.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You choose it, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you’ve chosen.

Can you fit cabinets to walls that aren’t straight?

Yes, it’s something we deal with all the time. Walls in older homes are rarely flat and floors often slope, so every cabinet is scribed and levelled.

Before and after fitting day

Getting the most from bespoke kitchens starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:

  • Let us know how parking works on your street
  • Choose your appliances before the design is final
  • Think about how the cabinets will get in
  • Line up your plumber, electrician and Gas Safe registered engineer early

New paintwork takes a while to harden after fitting. Go easy on the painted surfaces at first, and wipe them with a soft, damp cloth. After that, a soft cloth and mild soapy water is enough.

Choose your appliances before the design is finalised. Their sizes shape the cabinets, and changing them later can mean changing the units.

The problems bespoke kitchens solve

Uneven walls and floors make standard kitchens hard to fit. Gaps and wavy lines are hard to hide, and a bespoke kitchen is scribed and levelled to avoid that.

Most of the enquiries we get are about things like these:

  • A central island in a larger kitchen
  • A dresser that suits a period house
  • Cabinets built around the appliances you choose
  • Spray-painted or hand-painted cabinets

Close to St. Raphael's Edible Garden? A tall cupboard for outdoor things can be part of the kitchen design.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • How they handle walls that aren’t straight
  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it’s easy to buy.

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Bespoke kitchens for homes in Alperton

In the neighbourhood around Alperton, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 57%) and the years since 2000 (about 25%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how kitchens are fixed and fitted. Within a mile of the centre of Alperton, 5 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. A quarter or more of the homes in the area around Alperton (about 25%) were built since 2000, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Kitchens in homes built since 2000 are often open-plan, with stud walls, so the cabinet fixings are chosen for the board.

If you live in a flat close to Wembley Central station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. If your children go to Alperton Community School or a school nearby, a kitchen with a spot for school letters and lunch boxes makes mornings easier.
