Built-in Bookshelves in Bow

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on built-in bookshelves in Bow starts with a design visit, and everything is made in our workshop.

How it is made

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish suits bookshelves in an older house. The colour is agreed with you, and refreshing it later is straightforward.

Shelves

Each shelf’s depth suits its job: shallow for paperbacks, deeper for art books and records.

Built-in bookshelves in Bow: what you get

Bookshelves do not have to stop at a doorway or a window. A bookcase can wrap around a door, with shelves running over the top. It uses wall space that often goes to waste. People normally come to us about bare walls that could hold shelving and shelving that works with picture rails and cornices; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

In a home built since 2000, the aerial point and sockets are typically already fixed in place. Many homes around Bow are from those years, so we design built-in bookshelves around the existing points rather than moving them. Any new socket is a job for your electrician, and we leave space and cable routes for it.

If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we’ll tell you. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths.

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

With off-the-shelf shelving, you’re limited to the maker’s finishes. We paint ours in the colour you choose, spray painted in the workshop or hand painted, so they can match the walls or stand out. Ready-made units fixed to stud walls are often held by fixings that do not suit the board. Built-in pieces are designed with the right fixings from the start, and heavy pieces can stand on the floor.

We don’t publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote, naming the materials and finish. To start, message us from the contact page.

Common questions about built-in bookshelves

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Bow?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Can you make built-in bookshelves for a home in Bow?

Yes. Bow is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Tower Hamlets and London. To get started, you can use our contact form with a few details.

Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?

It’s something we deal with all the time. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base.

Can built-in shelves be adjustable?

They can be, and many people choose a mix. A few fixed shelves keep the bookcase rigid, with adjustable ones in between.

How long does it take to fit built-in bookshelves?

It depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. The making happens in our workshop, so the time in your home is mostly fitting and finishing.

Does my lease affect fitted furniture?

Possibly. Leases vary, and some require the building owner’s consent for alterations. We cannot give advice on your lease, so it’s worth checking before fitting day.

Fitting day, step by step

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. Most of the decisions were made during the design visit and set out in your quote, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully. How long fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a newer development, the lift, the concierge and set working hours may all need checking, so check them with the managing agent before fitting day. Built-in bookshelves are made in sections sized for the lift and doors.

  1. You get in touch about built-in bookshelves. A rough idea of the wall and the books is plenty to start with.
  2. At the design visit, we measure the wall, check how it is built and plan spans and depths with you, and talk about cupboards below.
  3. You receive a quote setting out the layout and the paint finish, including spray or hand painting.
  4. We build the shelving in our workshop, sizing each shelf for what it carries. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home, scribed to the walls and fixed to suit them.

Before we arrive

Built-in bookshelves in Bow: local notes

About 44% of the homes in the streets around Bow went up since 2000, and about 20% between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. That matters for built-in bookshelves, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. The Roman Road Market Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Bow. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. The council can confirm if you’re not sure. TfL’s red routes have strict stopping rules. If your street in Bow joins a main road, it’s worth telling us at the measuring visit. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.

The wider area includes historic houses like Sutton House, about 1.6 miles north-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for built-in bookshelves. For a family home near Old Ford Primary - A Paradigm Academy, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design. If your home is one of the older houses near St Paul Old Ford, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for built-in bookshelves.

What affects the price in Bow

To work out the quote, we look at:

  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, then set it out in the quote.

What to send when you get in touch

To help us picture the room, please include:

  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • Examples of the look you are after
  • Approximate measurements of the space

The quote is built from the design visit. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and discuss the design with you. A quote in writing follows the visit, so you can take your time with it. To book one, fill in our short enquiry form.
