When is bespoke worth it?

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it’s easy to buy.

Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: flat-pack is usually cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

Built-in bookshelves for homes in Fish Island

Span, depth and load decide whether a shelf will stay straight. For a long shelf of books, we use a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support part way. Birch plywood is strong and helps shelves stay flat. We make built-in bookshelves from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about wasted wall space around a door or window and books with nowhere left to go.

Many homes around Fish Island were built since 2000, and newer homes seldom have fitted storage in the living room. Built-in bookshelves can be planned around where the sockets and aerial points already are, with cable routes built in. Walls in newer homes are often plasterboard on studs, which is fine for fitted furniture when the fixings are right.

A written quote is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It describes the built-in bookcase we’ve designed for the room, what it’s made from and how it is finished, and the workshop works from it.

Common questions about built-in bookshelves

My home in Fish Island is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Built-in bookshelves are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Fish Island?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to let us know about parking during the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Just mention it when you get in touch, and we’ll see what we can do.

What happens if there is a radiator where I want shelves?

It is possible with some thought. Heat needs space to escape, so we leave a gap or open front rather than boxing the radiator in. Often the better answer is to stop the shelves short of it, or have your plumber move it.

Do you do the electrics?

No. Electrical work is not something we do; it’s a job for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need it. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

How fitting works for built-in bookshelves

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving everything tidy. How long the fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Newer homes often have stud walls, so on fitting day heavy pieces go into the studs or stand on the floor. Floors are protected throughout, as many newer homes have finished floors that mark easily.

  1. You contact us with a few details about the wall and your books. A rough idea of the wall and the books is plenty to start with.
  2. At the design visit, we measure the wall, check how it’s built and plan spans and depths with you, and talk about cupboards below.
  3. You receive a quote setting out the layout and the paint finish.
  4. The bookcase is made in our workshop, with shelves sized for their span and load.
  5. Fitting day: the bookcase goes in, is levelled and scribed, and fixed securely.

Where other trades come in

Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. In practice, that means:

  • Plumbing work around the shelves
  • Repairing loose plaster or weak walls before fitting
  • Moving sockets or switches, which needs an electrician

Most of the enquiries we get are about needs like these:

  • Somewhere to keep toys and books tidy
  • A home library or study
  • Room for a record collection
  • Bare walls that could hold shelving

To work out the quote, we look at:

  • How square the room is
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We’ll talk through what you need inside at the measuring visit, and the quote follows.
