Built-in bookshelves in Brentford End
Built-in bookshelves in Brentford End
A shelf’s strength depends on its span, its depth and its load. For a long shelf of books, we use a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support part way. We often use birch plywood, which is stiff and strong. We make built-in bookshelves from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the usual reasons to get in touch are low shelves children can reach and shelves deep enough for large books.
In an area like Brentford End, where interwar homes or semis make up much of the housing, many living rooms have been opened up to the dining room behind. That leaves a long room with a chimney breast on one side, which suits built-in bookshelves along that wall. At the design visit we plan any cable routes and ventilation the room needs.
After the design visit, we send you a quote in writing. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so it’s clear what’s included.

When is bespoke worth it?
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot usually do that in an older room.
Before and after fitting day
Most of what helps is simple. Here’s what we suggest:
- Let us know about parking and access during the design visit
- Measure your tallest and deepest books
- Decide whether you want doors on the lower section
- Decide whether you want fixed shelves, adjustable shelves or both
Paint is dry to the touch long before it has fully cured. At first, lift books onto the shelves rather than pushing them across, to avoid marking the new finish.
Keep heavy things on low shelves, and never climb the shelves to reach the top.

Questions we’re often asked
Is Brentford End in the area you cover for built-in bookshelves?
Yes. Brentford End is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Hounslow and London. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit.
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
How much will my built-in bookcase cost?
Size, doors and drawers, what goes inside and the finish all affect it, along with access and parking. The price comes in a written quote after the design visit.
How do I get a quote?
It is easiest to drop us a line using the contact form with some details about the room. We then arrange a design visit, measure up and send a written quote.
Who chooses the colour?
You choose it. The paint colour is agreed with you.
Can I send pictures before the visit?
Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, particularly with rough sizes. To send them, get in touch through our contact form.
The problems built-in bookshelves solve
Often, the books simply have nowhere left to go. They’re stacked on the floor, two deep on the shelves or packed into boxes. A built-in bookcase uses a whole wall for far more space than a standalone bookcase.
A few of the things people ask us to solve are these:
- Shelves deep enough for large books
- Shelves that sag under books
- Books piled on the floor
- A home library or study
For families living near The Green School, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
- How they handle walls that are not straight
- Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
- Whether they measure the room themselves
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Off-the-shelf bookcases come in fixed depths. Bespoke shelving can mix depths to suit what you own. Even in a 1930s house, walls and floors are not perfectly true, and standalone units can lean or gap. Built-in pieces are adjusted to the room on site.
There’s no price list, because every piece is designed for one room. Instead, we measure, talk through the design and then quote in writing. To arrange a design visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Living-room carpentry in Brentford End: local notes
In the streets around Brentford End, the largest groups of homes date from the years since 2000 (about 31%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 30%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That matters for built-in bookshelves, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. The centre of Brentford End is within about a quarter of a mile of the Isleworth Riverside Conservation Area. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. The council can confirm if you are not sure. TfL’s red routes have strict stopping rules. If you live on or close to a main road in Brentford End, let us know during the design visit. Then we can work out where to load and unload.
If you live in a period home close to Church of St Lawrence, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for built-in bookshelves. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Syon House Conservatory, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent.

Fitting day, step by step
Finishing comes last. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. In a 1920s or 1930s house, the hall and stairs are normally simple, but the route in is still measured, not just the room. Built-in bookshelves arrive in sections and are assembled in place, with floors protected throughout.
