Fitting day, step by step

Fitting day follows a set order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. You get in touch about built-in bookshelves.
  2. At the design visit, we measure the wall, check how it’s built and plan spans and depths with you.
  3. We send a quote in writing with the design, materials and finish, including spray or hand painting.
  4. The bookcase is built in our workshop, with shelves sized for their span and load. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home, scribed to the walls and fixed to suit them.

How to prepare

  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand

Ask for a quote

A quote begins with some details from you: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of pictures if you can take them. When you are ready, get in touch through our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design, then send a written quote.

Advice

How we make built-in bookshelves for Gillette Corner

Shelving can frame a door or a window. A bookcase can wrap around a door, with shelves running over the top, or frame a window with a seat or desk below. It makes use of wall space that is normally left bare. If your home has storage for children’s books and games and bare walls that could hold shelving, that is what built-in bookshelves are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

With interwar houses or semis a big part of the picture around Gillette Corner, many living rooms have been opened up to the dining room behind. The result is often a long room with a chimney breast, a good spot for built-in bookshelves. At the design visit we plan any cable routes and ventilation the room needs.

Our quotes are written in plain words. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, all taken from the design visit.

What it’s made from

Shelves

Long spans need a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. Splitting the run into shorter bays also helps.

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF gives sharp edges and smooth faces, ready for spray or hand painting. We use the moisture-resistant grade for fitted work.

Common questions about built-in bookshelves

Does a conservation area in or near Gillette Corner affect fitted furniture?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Gillette Corner?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You choose it. Whichever finish you pick, it is in the colour you have chosen.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by arrangement. Tell us when you contact us if a Saturday suits you best.

How long does it take to fit built-in bookshelves?

How long fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We will talk you through what to expect beforehand.

Where is the furniture made?

We make it in our workshop, to the design and sizes agreed after the design visit. Then we bring it to your home and fit it.

The problems built-in bookshelves solve

Often, the books simply have nowhere left to go. They’re stacked on the floor, two deep on the shelves or packed into boxes. Built-in shelving uses the full height and width of a wall.

We’re often asked to help with:

  • A bare wall above a doorway
  • Space for art books and records
  • Shelving behind a desk for books and files
  • Shelves that suit a period room

If your children go to Marlborough Primary School or a school nearby, built-in bookshelves can be planned with low cupboards for toys and higher shelves for everything else.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
  • Real projects you can actually look at

Caring for painted furniture

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. A few pointers help:

  • Mention any radiator on the wall
  • Plan any sockets or wiring with your electrician before fitting
  • Estimate how many metres of books you have
  • Consider deeper cupboards at the bottom

A soft, dry or slightly damp cloth is all painted shelves need. Avoid abrasive pads and strong sprays, as they can dull the finish.

Overloading is the main cause of sagging. Mention any heavy collection you plan to add when we design the shelves, so we can allow for it.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Bought bookcases usually come in one depth. Bespoke shelving can mix depths to suit what you own. The spaces between doors, windows and radiators are seldom a stock size, so ready-made furniture often ends up in the wrong place. Fitted furniture is designed around them.

Access to the room makes a difference too. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, and that is part of the price. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured.

The National Heritage List has 21 entries within half a mile of the centre of Gillette Corner. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them.
