How we make built-in bookshelves for Spring Grove

Built-in shelving fills a wall, an alcove or a whole room, and is made for that space. It runs from wall to wall and, if you like, up to the ceiling. For a home in Spring Grove, the first step is a design visit to measure up and talk through your books. If you are living with a bare wall above a doorway and shelves that sag under books, built-in bookshelves made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.

Many houses from between the wars, and many semis, have been extended or opened up inside, which matters around Spring Grove, where homes like these are a big part of the housing. In a long knocked-through room, built-in bookshelves can run the full length of one wall. New plasterboard in an extension and older brick or block in the original house take different fixings.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Flats, conversions and lettings

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, unloading takes some planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so let us know about it at the measuring visit.

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, as it makes good use of an tricky room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.

How fitting works for built-in bookshelves

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and lift the floor protection. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and answer any questions. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the wall and your books, including roughly how many books there are.
  2. We come to measure, look at how the wall is built and agree the layout.
  3. Your quote follows, with the design, materials and finish set out.
  4. The bookcase is made in our workshop, using birch plywood or moisture-resistant MDF sized for the span.
  5. The shelving is fitted in your home, scribed to the walls and fixed to suit them.

Preparing the room

  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall

Arranging a design visit

We quote once we have seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and go through the design with you, then send a written quote. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. To book a design visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Advice

Why bespoke in Spring Grove?

With off-the-shelf shelving, you’re limited to the maker’s finishes. We paint ours in the colour you choose, by spray or by hand, so they can match the walls or stand out. Off-the-shelf furniture comes in a few set depths, so they can stick out too far or waste space behind. Fitted furniture is made to the depth the space can take.

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

How it is made

Spray-painted finish

Spraying in the workshop means the shelves arrive already painted. Let the paint cure fully before loading heavy books.

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish suits bookshelves in an older house. You choose the colour, and refreshing it later is simple.

Questions from Spring Grove

I live near Isleworth station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Hounslow and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with a few details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

What depth do built-in bookshelves need?

It depends on what you keep. Paperbacks need much less depth than art books or records, so many people mix depths. We measure your largest books and plan the depths with you.

How much will my built-in bookcase cost?

It depends on the size, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish, along with access and parking. The price comes in a written quote after the design visit.

Can my walls take a full bookcase?

It depends on the wall, which is why we look at it first. We fix bookshelves with fixings that suit the wall, into sound brick or studs. If a wall is not suitable, we will tell you and suggest another approach.

How long are you in the house for fitting?

The time on site depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We’ll explain what fitting day involves before we start.

Living-room storage in Spring Grove

About 34% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Spring Grove went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 24% since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. There are 8 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Spring Grove. Being near listed buildings doesn’t make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. Red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping and loading. If your home in Spring Grove is on or near a main road, tell us during the design visit. That way we can plan where to load and unload.

For an older house near St Mary's Church, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. For a family home near Isleworth and Syon School for Boys, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room. If you live in a flat close to Isleworth station, the route in is measured along with the room itself, and the sections are sized to fit it.

Could you do it yourself?

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is typically a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, and standard units leave gaps.
