Honest limits

Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. That means:

  • Any electrical work (your electrician handles that, and Part P covers some of it)
  • Connecting and setting up your equipment
  • Plastering or decorating around the unit

Not sure whether your space suits TV and media units? You can tell us about the room on our contact form and we will tell you. How it works.

About our TV and media units in Broadfields Estate

Everything starts with the screen. The opening is planned around your current TV, or a bigger one if you are likely to upgrade, with room around it so it doesn’t look squeezed. The height of the screen matters as well: we set it to suit the sofa, not the shape of the wall. We make TV and media units from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are boxes with no ventilation and empty alcoves beside the TV.

With interwar houses or semis a big part of the picture around Broadfields Estate, many homes have had the front and back rooms knocked together. The result is often a long room with a chimney breast, a good spot for TV and media units. Cable routes for a TV or speakers, and space for set-top boxes, are planned at the design visit, with any new sockets left to your electrician.

A quote in writing follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish.

How fitting day works

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and fitting day is where that happens. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. A front path or side gate can make the carry from the van simpler. We measure the path, any steps and the front door as part of the route. Floors are covered from the door to the room, and the sections are assembled in place.

  1. It starts with a short note from you about the TV wall.
  2. At the design visit we measure the wall and also the hall, stairs and doorways the unit has to pass through.
  3. We send a written quote.
  4. The unit is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections that fit the route in.
  5. We bring the sections in, join them on the wall and scribe them to fit.

Preparing the room

  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going

How we price TV and media units

The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. That depends on:

  • The overall size of the piece
  • The number of doors and drawers
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside

We do not publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a quote in writing. To arrange a design visit, message us from the contact page.

What we need to know

Getting a few details early makes the visit more useful. If you can, send:

  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall

Getting a quote starts with a few details: the room, rough measurements and some photos if you have them. To send them, message us from the contact page. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

Living-room carpentry in Broadfields Estate: local notes

In the streets around Broadfields Estate, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 52%) and the years since 2000 (about 20%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Red routes are run by TfL, with tight limits on where and when vehicles can stop. If you live on or close to a main road in Broadfields Estate, let us know during the design visit. We can then plan where the van will stop. Detached and semi-detached houses are home to about 59% of households in the streets around Broadfields Estate, based on Census 2021. In a semi or detached house, a driveway, where there is one, can make unloading easier.

Living in a block of flats near Mill Hill Broadway station? Then check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. Close to Edgwarebury Park? TV and media units can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it. For a family home near Rosh Pinah Primary School, TV and media units can be planned with low cupboards for toys and higher shelves for everything else.

Your questions about TV and media units in Broadfields Estate

Can you make TV and media units for a home in Broadfields Estate?

Yes, Broadfields Estate is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Barnet and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Mill Hill Broadway station?

Yes, homes across Barnet and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can use our contact form with a few details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Not typically. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

How do you hide the TV cables?

That is the aim, and it is planned from the start. Access panels make future changes easy without taking the unit apart. For a wall-mounted TV, a route behind the screen is planned in.

Do I need the building owner’s consent?

Possibly. A lease can require consent for alterations, including fixing furniture to the walls. Check your lease, as we cannot advise on it.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by arrangement. Let us know when you first get in touch.

Materials and finishes

Doors and drawer fronts

Drawers keep controllers and games tidy. They’re painted in the same colour as the rest.

Plinths and scribe strips

Scribe strips are trimmed on site to meet walls that aren’t straight.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture typically costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls.
