  • A home library or study

Built-in bookshelves in Coney Hall

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Bought bookcases come in the maker’s colours. We paint ours in the colour you choose, by spray or by hand, to suit the room. Bays, box rooms and stair bulkheads are where off-the-shelf furniture struggles most, and interwar homes often have all three. Built-in pieces are designed to fit them.

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size comes first. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

What you get with us

  • Over 300 projects completed
  • Saturday work by arrangement
  • A spray or hand-painted finish
  • Edges scribed to follow your walls

About our built-in bookshelves in Coney Hall

We make built-in bookshelves from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood in our workshop. MDF suits the panels and faces, while birch plywood is used where strength matters. You can have a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, in the colour you choose. We fit across Bromley and the rest of London. If your home has books with nowhere left to go and shelves that suit a period room, built-in bookshelves made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.

A good part of the housing around Coney Hall is interwar, semi-detached or detached. In a typical 1930s house, the front room has a bay at one end and a chimney breast with an alcove to either side, which decides where built-in bookshelves sit. Walls in houses of that age are typically straighter than in Victorian ones, though they’re still checked and scribed where needed.

A written quote is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It sets out the built-in bookcase designed for your room, its materials and its finish.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the design visit.

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. If there’s a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Mention it when you contact us.

Built-in bookshelves in Coney Hall: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Coney Hall were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 63%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 24%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Coney Hall include The Swan Public House (Grade II), under half a mile north-east, and The White Lodge (Grade II), about 0.5 miles north-west. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for instance removing original joinery or fixing into it, may need listed building consent from the council. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. Controlled parking zones are run by the boroughs, so the rules in Bromley are set locally. If your street in Coney Hall is in a controlled parking zone, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension through the council may be needed. Tell us what the parking is like at the measuring visit.

If you live in a flat close to West Wickham station, it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. For families living near Forest Academy, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place. The wider area includes historic houses like Addington Palace, about 1.2 miles south-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for built-in bookshelves.

Common questions about built-in bookshelves

Can you make built-in bookshelves for a home in Coney Hall?

Yes, we work across Bromley, Coney Hall included, and across the rest of London. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Coney Hall?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to tell us about parking at the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

How long are you in the house for fitting?

The time on site depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. We’ll explain what fitting day involves before we start.

How do I get a quote for built-in bookshelves in Coney Hall?

Simply get in touch through our contact form. It is useful to send rough measurements and a few pictures, and we’ll arrange a design visit, followed by a quote in writing.

How do you get the furniture up the stairs?

We plan the route in at the measuring visit. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doors, and the furniture is made in sections sized to get through.

Do pictures help?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. To send them, use our contact form.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t usually do that in an older room.

When you need someone else

Some parts of a job need another trade, like an electrician, a plumber or an engineer on the Gas Safe Register. Here’s what to know:

  • Decorating the rest of the room
  • Knocking through or altering walls
  • Any wiring or new sockets (your electrician handles that)

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can message us from the contact page and we’ll give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

Fitting day, step by step

You won’t need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared, as agreed at the design visit. After that, it’s over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. The time the fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. In a 1920s or 1930s house, the hall and stairs are usually simple, but the route in is still measured, not just the room. Built-in bookshelves arrive in sections and are assembled in place, with floors protected throughout.

  1. You get in touch with some details about where the bookshelves will go.
  2. We visit to measure the wall, the openings and the skirting, cornice and picture rail the shelves must meet.
  3. We then send a written quote for the bookshelves.
  4. We build the shelving in sections in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day each section is set level and scribed to walls that are rarely straight, so there are no gaps along the sides.
  6. Your chosen finish is sprayed before fitting or painted by hand in the room.

Preparing the room

  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street

Starting with a design visit

We quote once we have seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.
