Fitted wardrobes for homes in Cranbrook

Some bedrooms suit wardrobes that wrap around the bed, with cupboards each side and a run of storage above the headboard. In other rooms, the units sit either side of a window, sometimes with a dressing table or a window seat between them. The layout is planned so the room does not feel boxed in. If you are living with not enough hanging space and standard wardrobes that don’t fill the wall, fitted wardrobes made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.

Floors in older houses often slope, which matters around Cranbrook, as a large share of homes there date from before 1919. Pieces stand on a levelled plinth or adjustable feet, so doors close square and the gaps stay even. Where the wall bows, the edge is scribed to follow it.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

Questions from Cranbrook

Do you cover homes near Ilford station?

Yes. We cover all of Redbridge and the rest of London. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Cranbrook?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Who chooses the colour?

You choose it. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.

Hinged or sliding doors: which suits my bedroom?

Both work well, depending on the space. Hinged doors open a whole section at once but need room in front to swing, while sliding doors save space but only open part of the wardrobe at a time. We talk through both at the measuring visit.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.

Can I choose the layout inside the wardrobe?

The inside is planned around your clothes. It can include long and double hanging, shelves, drawers and space for shoes, in the proportions you need. We talk it through during the design visit.

Fitting day, step by step

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and take up the floor coverings. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and explain how to look after the paint. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Older London houses often have narrow hallways and tight turns on the stairs, so fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized to get through. Floors and stair carpets are protected on the way in and out, and the sections are joined and scribed in the room.

  1. You contact us with some details about the room and the wardrobes you’d like.
  2. We visit to measure up and plan the doors, rails, shelves and drawers with you.
  3. You receive a quote setting out the design and the paint finish, ready for you to read through.
  4. We build the wardrobes in our workshop, in sections sized to get into your home. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. Fitting day: the wardrobes go in, are levelled and scribed, and the doors are hung. The rails, shelves and drawers go in last.

Preparing the room

  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Let us know about parking near your home

Getting a quote

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you don’t, that is fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we have measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, message us from the contact page.

Fitted wardrobes in Cranbrook: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Cranbrook were built before 1919 (about 66%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 18%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. The National Heritage List records 9 entries within half a mile of the centre of Cranbrook. Being near listed buildings does not make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. More than half of the homes in the streets around Cranbrook (about 66%) were built before 1919, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Bedrooms in houses of that age often have a chimney breast and alcoves, which suit wardrobes built to their widths.

If you live in a period home close to St Clement's Church, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice. For families living near The Ursuline Academy Ilford, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else. Near listed buildings like Valentines Mansion, about 0.5 miles north of the centre of Cranbrook, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted wardrobes can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent.

What it’s made from

Moisture-resistant MDF

Wardrobe doors are large, so stability matters. MDF stays flat and gives a smooth surface for painting, whether the doors are plain or panelled.

Doors and drawer fronts

Hinged doors suit rooms with space in front. In a narrow room, sliding doors save space.

Flats, leases and landlords

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Let us know about it when you contact us.

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

What fitted wardrobes can’t fix

Not everything around fitted wardrobes is carpentry, such as an electrician, a plumber or a Gas Safe engineer. Here is what to bear in mind:

  • Removing walls, chimney breasts or any structural work
  • Building work to create a loft room
  • Any wiring or new sockets (your electrician handles those)

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can drop us a line using the contact form and we will give you a straight answer. How it works.

Tips worth knowing

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after with a little care. These habits help most:

  • Plan any socket or switch changes with your electrician before fitting
  • Measure the gap between the wardrobe wall and the bed
  • Check the route into your flat, not just the room
  • Let us know about any damp you have seen on bedroom walls

Hang clothes evenly along each rail rather than packing one end. Heavy coats are best on a short rail or near a support, so the rail stays straight.

Do not overload a single rail or shelf. Rails and shelves are planned for normal use, so mention anything unusually heavy when we plan.
