Loft Storage in Cranbrook

We make loft storage for homes in Cranbrook, designed around the room you have. We design your eaves cupboard at a visit to your home, make it in our workshop and fit it.

  • A sloping ceiling with no room for a wardrobe
  • A boarded loft that’s hard to keep organised
  • Unused space in a dormer

Loft storage in Cranbrook: what you get

Sloping ceilings make standard wardrobes hard to fit. We shape wardrobes to the slope, putting hanging space at the tall end and shelves or drawers where it’s low. It uses the full height of the room. We’ll plan it at the design visit in Cranbrook. If your home has no wardrobe that fits under the slope and a new loft conversion that needs storage, eaves cupboards made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.

Ceilings and floors in homes built before 1919 are rarely level, and a large share of homes around Cranbrook are that old. Eaves cupboards are scribed to the walls and levelled on site so doors, lids and drawers run true. Picture rails, skirting and cornices are worked around rather than removed, and the paint colour is agreed with you.

A quote in writing follows the design visit. It sets out the design we have talked through, the materials and the finish.

When is bespoke worth it?

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

Caring for painted furniture

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. A few pointers help:

  • Consider drawers for the deep, low spaces
  • Plan where the tall end of a wardrobe can go
  • Empty the eaves so we can see what’s behind
  • Tell us about parking during the design visit

We open each door and run each drawer with you before we go. Any access to the eaves is checked so it still opens. That way, everything works as planned.

Check now and then that handles and hinges are tight. Tightening early stops a small looseness getting worse. If a door drops or a drawer catches, use our contact form and tell us.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. If there is a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Mention it when you get in touch.

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations. We can’t advise on your lease.

Where other trades come in

Not everything around loft storage is carpentry, from an electrician to a plumber or an engineer on the Gas Safe Register. Here is what to bear in mind:

  • Insulation or ventilation work behind the eaves
  • Any wiring, which needs an electrician
  • Building work to turn a loft into a room

Questions we are often asked

Can you make loft storage for a home in Cranbrook?

Yes, Cranbrook is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Redbridge and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, and then we send a quote.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Cranbrook?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to let us know about parking at the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not typically. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, and furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need it. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

How long does it take to fit loft storage?

How long fitting takes depends on how much storage you want in the loft, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Because everything is built in our workshop, the work in your home is the fitting itself. We keep the route up to the loft as clear as possible.

What materials do you use for loft storage?

The storage is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. The carcasses and drawer boxes are birch plywood, which is strong and holds screws well, while the doors and panels are MDF, which paints well. Everything is finished by spray painting or hand painting.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

It needs a little planning: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. Damp treatment isn’t something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

What happens on fitting day

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Parking on terraced streets can be tight, particularly in a controlled parking zone, so details of permits, bays and any loading restrictions help. The van is unloaded quickly, with the sections carried straight in. Saturday fitting can be arranged.

  1. You tell us about your converted or boarded loft, including the eaves and any dormer.
  2. We measure the eaves, the slopes and the stairs up to the loft.
  3. The design is agreed and a quote in writing follows.
  4. Every part is made in our workshop, ready for a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
  5. The storage is fitted, scribed to the slopes and checked with you. Any hand painting is done in the loft.

Preparing the room

  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings

Making use of awkward spaces in Cranbrook

About 66% of the homes in the streets around Cranbrook went up before 1919, and about 18% between 1919 and 1939, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. The National Heritage List records 9 entries within half a mile of the centre of Cranbrook. Being near listed buildings does not make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. Around Cranbrook, about 66% of homes date from before 1919, well above the figure for Redbridge as a whole, about 27%, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. That makes period details like uneven walls, alcoves and picture rails more likely to shape the design.

If you live in a flat close to Ilford station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. Close to Valentines Park? Eaves cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Valentines Mansion, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.
