Why bespoke in Sydenham?
Bought bookcases come in the maker’s colours. Ours are painted in a colour agreed with you, spray painted in the workshop or hand painted, so they can match the walls or stand out. Recesses, sloping ceilings and awkward corners are where ready-made furniture struggles most, and most homes have one somewhere. Built-in pieces are made to fit them.
We do not publish set prices, because each job is designed for a single room. Instead, we measure, go through the design and then quote in writing, with the materials and finish set out. To start, send us a few details through our contact form.
Why us?
- A design visit, then a quote in writing
- Made in our workshop, then fitted in your home
- Every London borough and the City of London covered
- Spray painted or hand painted, in the colour you choose

About our built-in bookshelves in Sydenham
Shelving near a radiator needs some thought. The heat needs somewhere to go, so any shelving over or around a radiator is planned with a gap or an open front. Some people prefer to keep the shelves clear of the radiator altogether. If you are living with shelving that works with picture rails and cornices and bare walls that could hold shelving, that is what built-in bookshelves are for, made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
Whether your home in Sydenham is a period house, an interwar semi, a post-war flat or a newer build, the furniture is designed around your room rather than a standard size. Older rooms bring uneven walls and picture rails, while newer ones bring plasterboard walls and boxed-in pipes. We measure for whichever you have, and the pieces are made to suit.
Everything we agree during the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

What else we make in Sydenham
Built-in living-room furniture in Sydenham
Homes built before 1919 make up about 40% of the housing in the area around Sydenham, with about 28% built between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how built-in bookshelves are fixed and fitted. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Sydenham include Church of St Bartholomew (Grade II*), less than half a mile north-west, and Church of All Saints (Grade II), less than half a mile east. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, such as fixing into original panelling. It is worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. A quarter or more of the homes in the streets around Sydenham (about 28%) were built between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Rooms from that era are often squarer, with fewer alcoves and sometimes no chimney breast, so a full wall of built-in bookshelves is often the answer, with fixings chosen for the wall.
Kingswood House, about 1.2 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. If your children go to Kirkdale School or a school nearby, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room.
Sydenham is about 3 miles north of New Cross, in the London Borough of Lewisham. Anywhere in Sydenham, it works the same way: a design visit, a quote in writing, furniture built in our workshop and fitting in your home. We cover places right across Lewisham.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths.
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job.
What built-in bookshelves can’t fix
It is useful to know what’s outside our work before you plan:
- Repairing loose plaster or weak walls before fitting
- Moving sockets or switches, which needs an electrician
- Knocking through or altering walls
If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can send us a few details through our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How it works.

From workshop to your room
You are welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving everything tidy. How long fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Before fitting day, we check the route in not just the room, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route. We cover floors and doorways on the way in.
- It starts when you let us know about the wall and your books.
- We come to measure and go through the design.
- Your written quote follows, covering the design, materials and finish.
- The bookcase is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit it in your home and go through it with you before we leave. Fresh paint needs time to cure, so it’s best to load the shelves gently at first.
How to prepare
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
- Make sure pets are kept safely away

Questions from Sydenham
I live in a flat in Sydenham. How will the furniture get up the stairs?
At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Sydenham station?
Yes, homes across Lewisham and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with some details about the room.
Do you move sockets or add lighting?
No. Electrical work is not something we do; it is a job for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design.
What affects the price of built-in bookshelves?
Every job is priced for its room: the size, what goes inside, the finish and how square the room is all count. The written quote follows the design visit.
How do I get started?
Just drop us a line using the contact form. It is useful to send rough measurements and a few pictures, and we will arrange a design visit.
Are heavy bookshelves safe on any wall?
That depends on how the wall is built. We fix bookshelves with fixings that suit the wall, into sound brick or studs. Where a wall can’t take the load, we will say so and suggest another approach.
Why people ask for built-in bookshelves in Sydenham
Sagging or wobbly bookcases are another reason. Bowing is a sign the shelves are too long or too thin for the load. Bespoke shelves are sized for the span and the weight.
Some of the things we are asked to solve are these:
- Low shelves children can reach
- Shelves packed two rows deep
- Shelving behind a desk for books and files
- Wasted wall space around a door or window
For a flat near Sydenham station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.
