What we do not do
We do not treat damp or carry out building work, so these points are worth knowing:
- Making new openings, removing walls or other structural work
- Making good walls that can’t take fixings
- Any wiring or new sockets (your electrician handles that)
If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can drop us a line using the contact form and we will give you a straight answer. How it works.

Built-in bookshelves for homes in Duckett's Green
Shelving can frame a door or a window. A bookcase can wrap around a door, with shelves running over the top, or frame a window with a seat or desk below. It uses wall space that often goes to waste. People normally come to us about wasted wall space around a door or window and shelves that sag under books, and the answer is made in our workshop from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
Older houses tend to come with picture rails, tall skirtings and cornices, and built-in bookshelves need to meet those lines neatly. A large share of the housing around Duckett's Green went up before 1919, so mouldings are something we expect to talk about during the design visit. The top of the furniture can stop at the picture rail or carry on to the cornice, whichever suits the room.
The quote comes in writing, so there is time to read it properly and talk it over at home. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

The problems built-in bookshelves solve
Records, large art books and collections need shelves sized for them. Off-the-shelf bookcases seldom have the right depth, and that’s where bespoke shelving helps.
These come up often when people first get in touch:
- Shelves that suit a period room
- Shelving behind a desk for books and files
- Shelves deep enough for large books
- Wasted wall space around a door or window
Close to Ducketts Common? A room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone.

Questions from Duckett's Green
Is parking a problem for fitting in Duckett's Green?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to tell us about parking during the design visit.
Is Duckett's Green in the area you cover for built-in bookshelves?
Yes. Duckett's Green is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Haringey and London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.
Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?
There are two ways to finish it: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.
Should my shelves be fixed or adjustable?
It’s your choice: fixed, adjustable or a mix. Fixed shelves brace the bookcase, while adjustable ones let you change the spacing later. Many people choose both.
Do I get to choose the colour?
You choose it. The paint colour is agreed with you before anything is painted.
What depth do built-in bookshelves need?
It depends on what you keep. Paperbacks need much less depth than art books or records. We plan depths around your collection at the measuring visit.

What else we make in Duckett's Green
Living-room storage in Duckett's Green
Homes built before 1919 make up about 62% of the housing in the streets around Duckett's Green, with about 12% built since 2000, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Near the centre of Duckett's Green, Historic England’s list includes The Salisbury Public House (Grade II*), about 0.5 miles south, and Church of St John the Baptist (greek Orthodox) (Grade II*), about 0.5 miles west. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features such as panelling may need listed building consent. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. Red routes are run by TfL, with tight limits on where and when vehicles can stop. If your home is on or just off a main road, it helps to mention it. We can then plan where the van will stop.
For a family home near St John Vianney RC Primary School, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place. If your home is one of the older houses near Christ Church, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for built-in bookshelves.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Bought bookcases typically come in one depth, which may be too deep for paperbacks or too shallow for art books. Bespoke shelving can mix depths to suit what you own. Recesses in older houses come in every size except the standard ones, so off-the-shelf pieces either don’t fit or leave a gap either side. Furniture made for the space fills it.
Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space.

What happens on fitting day
The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that’s what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Hallways in period houses are often narrow, and the stairs turn sharply, so built-in bookshelves are made in sections sized to get through. Floors and stair carpets are protected on the way in and out, and the sections are joined and scribed in the room.
- You get in touch with a few details about where the bookshelves will go.
- We visit to measure the wall, the openings and the skirting, cornice and picture rail the shelves must meet.
- A written quote follows, with the design, materials and finish.
- The sections are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit the shelving in your home, scribing the edges to follow the walls and ceiling, so there are no gaps along the sides.
- Your chosen finish is sprayed before fitting or painted by hand in the room.

How we price built-in bookshelves
A few things affect what fitted furniture costs:
- Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
- The number of doors and drawers
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
- Parking near your home
Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.
Before the design visit
To give us a picture of the room, it helps to include:
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
- Examples of the look you’re after
- Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
To get a quote, use our contact form and tell us a little about the room and roughly what you’d like. We then arrange a design visit to measure and go through the design, and send you a quote in writing afterwards.
