How fitting day works

At the end, we tidy up and take up the floor coverings. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together. How long the fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Older London houses often have narrow hallways and tight turns on the stairs, so built-in bookshelves are made in sections sized to get through. Floors and stair carpets are protected on the way in and out.

  1. You get in touch about built-in bookshelves. A rough idea of the wall and the books is plenty to start with.
  2. At the design visit, we measure the wall, check how it is built and plan spans and depths with you, and talk about cupboards below.
  3. You receive a quote setting out the layout and the paint finish.
  4. We build the shelving in our workshop, sizing each shelf for what it carries. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home, scribed to the walls and fixed to suit them. Fixings are chosen to suit brick, plaster or stud walls.

Built-in bookshelves in Parsons Green: what you get

You can have fixed shelves, adjustable ones or a mix. Fixed shelves add stiffness and look solid, while adjustable ones let you change the spacing as your books change. A mix often works best so the bookcase stays rigid and you keep some flexibility. We make built-in bookshelves from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about shelving that works with picture rails and cornices and shelves packed two rows deep.

Around Parsons Green, a large share of homes date from before 1919, and in London most homes of that age are Victorian or Edwardian. Houses of that age usually have a chimney breast in the front and back reception rooms, with an alcove either side, which gives built-in bookshelves an obvious place to go. Because old walls bow and floors slope, the units are scribed to follow the wall and levelled at the base.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Bespoke is not instant: there’s a design visit, a quote and workshop time. If you’re renting or moving soon, a good standalone bookcase may be the better buy. The two recesses beside a chimney breast are seldom an identical size, and standard units bought as a pair rarely suit both. Fitted furniture is made to each one separately.

Tricky rooms take more time: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it, written once we have measured up.

What we don’t do

We make and fit furniture, and we don’t do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. There are a few other points to bear in mind:

  • Electrical work, such as new sockets or switches, which is for your electrician
  • Relocating radiators or pipework
  • Decorating the rest of the room

Do you need built-in bookshelves in Parsons Green?

Some want a room that works as a library or a study. A room lined with books feels different.

Here’s what built-in bookshelves can help with:

  • Shelves packed two rows deep
  • Shelving behind a desk for books and files
  • Shelves that sag under books
  • Low shelves children can reach

If you live near Parsons Green (park), built-in bookshelves can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • Have they thought about parking near you?
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
  • Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?

Parsons Green homes and built-in bookshelves

Homes built before 1919 make up about 60% of the housing in the streets around Parsons Green, with about 18% built since 2000, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how built-in bookshelves are fixed and fitted. The National Heritage List has 34 entries within half a mile of the centre of Parsons Green. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and built-in bookshelves can be designed to work around them. About 26% of households in the neighbourhood around Parsons Green live in flats in converted or shared houses, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. Conversions often leave rooms in unusual shapes, with partition walls, boxed-in pipes and chimney breasts in odd places, and the route in may go through a shared hall and stairs. A lease can require consent for alterations, so it is worth checking yours first.

For a family home near Lady Margaret School, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place. The wider area includes historic houses like Fulham Palace, about 0.8 miles west. If your own home is a period one, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at.

Questions we’re often asked

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Parsons Green?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to tell us about parking during the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Do you cover homes near Imperial Wharf station?

Yes. We cover all of Hammersmith and Fulham and the rest of London. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with some details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Who chooses the colour?

You choose it. We agree the colour with you.

Can bookshelves go around a door?

Yes. Wrapping shelves around a door or window is a good way to fill a wall. The openings are measured when we visit, and the shelving is planned around the frames.

Will built-in bookshelves sag?

Sag comes down to span, depth and load. We choose the shelf thickness and material to suit, with supports or shorter bays on long runs. Spreading heavy books helps too.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

It is something we deal with all the time. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth.

How we price built-in bookshelves

Several things affect the price:

  • The width and height of the space
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • Parking near your home

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

Before the design visit

A little information at the start saves time later. If you can, send:

  • Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved
  • How you want to use the space

The quote is built from the design visit. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. A quote in writing follows the visit for you to look over. To arrange the visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.
