About our built-in bookshelves in Forty Hill

We make built-in bookshelves from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood in our workshop. MDF gives smooth panels that paint well, and birch plywood gives strong shelves. The finish is spray painted in the workshop or hand painted, in a colour agreed with you. We work across London, including Forty Hill. If your home has space for art books and records and bowing shelves in an old bookcase, that’s what built-in bookshelves are for, made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

A typical 1930s semi has a bay window at the front and a chimney breast with a recess either side. Around Forty Hill, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a big part of the housing, so it’s a layout worth planning for. We tend to plan built-in bookshelves along the chimney breast wall so the bay keeps its light.

The written quote is your record of the job. It sets out the built-in bookcase designed for your room, its materials and its finish, and the workshop works from it.

Built-in bookshelves in Forty Hill: local notes

About 43% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Forty Hill went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 24% between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. There are 21 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Forty Hill. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. All of London, Enfield included, is inside the ULEZ. It applies to every van that comes to fit furniture in Forty Hill. We plan parking and access with you at the design visit.

Near listed buildings like Forty Hall, under half a mile north of the centre of Forty Hill, older homes may keep original joinery that built-in bookshelves can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. For an older house near Jesus Church, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.

How fitting day works

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, which keeps the lines straight. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. The main stairs in houses of that age are usually straighter. Each section is assembled and fixed in the room.

  1. It starts when you tell us about the wall and your books.
  2. At the design visit we measure and plan the shelves together.
  3. We send a quote in writing.
  4. We make the shelving in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home and go through it with you before we leave. Fresh paint needs time to cure, so it’s best to load the shelves gently at first.

Before fitting day

  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager

Getting a quote

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, when we have measured up and talked through the design. For a quote, send us a few details through our contact form.

Related advice

Could you do it yourself?

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.

Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture normally costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

Materials and finishes

Shelves

You can have fixed shelves, adjustable ones or both. Fixed shelves add rigidity, while adjustable ones let you change the spacing.

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which makes it our usual choice for long or heavily loaded shelves. Its layered edge can be painted or left on show.

The problems built-in bookshelves solve

For some, the aim is a home library or a quiet study. A room lined with books feels different, and can include a desk or a window seat.

Here are some of the needs we’re asked about most:

  • Wasted wall space around a door or window
  • Storage for children’s books and games
  • Books piled on the floor
  • Shelves deep enough for large books

If you live near Enfield Town Park, built-in bookshelves can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it.

What to check before you book

  • Will the quote be in writing?
  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?
  • How doors and drawers are fitted

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

How we price built-in bookshelves

When we put a quote together, we consider:

  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • The overall size of the piece

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. A larger piece means more material and more time. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

What to send when you contact us

Getting a few details early makes the visit more useful. If you can, send:

  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved

We quote once we’ve seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and go through the design with you, then send a written quote. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. To book a design visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Questions we are often asked

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Do you cover homes near Turkey Street station?

Yes, homes across Enfield and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with a few details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Can I send pictures ahead of the visit?

Yes, they help. Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, especially with rough sizes. You can send them when you get in touch through our contact form.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

It can be done with some care: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. Damp treatment is not something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

How do you get the furniture up the stairs?

We plan the route in during the design visit. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doors, and the furniture is made in sections sized to get through.

How are built-in bookshelves fixed to the wall?

That depends on how the wall is built. Fixings are chosen for the wall type. Where a wall can’t take the load, we will say so.
