Built-in bookshelves in St Pancras

In period rooms, shelving has to meet skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. We can cut around them, stop below them or run neatly up to them. Since period walls are rarely flat, the edges are scribed to follow them. Typical reasons to get in touch are shelving that frames a window and bookcases that lean or wobble, and the answer is built in our workshop from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

With most households around St Pancras in purpose-built flats, getting the furniture into the building matters as much as the design. Built-in bookshelves are made in sections sized to go up the stairs, into the lift and through the front door, and assembled and fitted in place. A lease can require consent before you fix furniture to the walls, so it is worth checking first.

Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made at our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Why bespoke in St Pancras?

Bought bookcases come in the maker’s colours. Ours are painted in a colour agreed with you, to suit the room. Ready-made furniture stops at a set height, whatever the ceiling, which wastes the space above. Built-in pieces use the full height.

The finish affects the cost: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Your questions about built-in bookshelves in St Pancras

Do you make built-in bookshelves for homes in St Pancras?

Yes, we work across Camden, St Pancras included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with some details.

How do you fit built-in bookshelves in a flat in St Pancras?

We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Built-in bookshelves are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. We’ll also ask about access and parking, and afterwards we send a quote in writing.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It’s good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

How do I get a quote for built-in bookshelves in St Pancras?

It is easiest to use our contact form. We then arrange a design visit, measure up and send a written quote.

Should I send pictures?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, particularly with rough sizes. To send them, fill in our short enquiry form.

Living-room storage in St Pancras

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around St Pancras were built before 1919 (about 41%) and since 2000 (about 19%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. There are 419 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of St Pancras. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. The ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) now covers the whole of London, Camden included. So any van that delivers or fits furniture in St Pancras is covered by it. How the van gets to your door is planned during the design visit.

Near listed buildings like Church of St Pancras, about 0.5 miles west of the centre of St Pancras, older homes may keep original joinery that built-in bookshelves can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. For a family home near St George the Martyr Church of England Primary School, built-in bookshelves can be planned with low cupboards for toys and higher shelves for everything else.

When you need someone else

Some parts of a job need another trade, such as an electrician, a plumber or a Gas Safe registered engineer. Here is what to bear in mind:

  • Redecorating, which is for your decorator
  • Knocking through or altering walls
  • Any wiring or new sockets (your electrician handles that)

Not sure whether your space suits built-in bookshelves? You can drop us a line using the contact form and we will tell you. How a job runs, step by step.

How fitting works for built-in bookshelves

Fitting day follows a set order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Some buildings have a concierge, a lift booking system or set working hours, so check them with the managing agent before fitting day. Floors in the flat and the common parts are protected while the furniture comes in.

  1. To begin, send us a few details through our contact form; a brief note on the books and objects you want on show is plenty.
  2. We visit to measure, check how the wall is built and plan the spans, because long shelves under heavy books need a thicker shelf, a lip or a support.
  3. Your written quote sets out the shelving and the finish.
  4. The bookcase is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with shelves stiffened where they span furthest.
  5. We fit it in your home with fixings that suit the wall, and a hand-painted finish, if you chose one, follows on site.

Preparing the room

  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician ahead of time

Getting a quote

To make a start, fill in our short enquiry form and tell us a little about the room and roughly what you’d like. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and a written quote follows.

What prompts built-in bookshelves in St Pancras

Most people come to us because the books have outgrown the shelves. Piles on the floor and double rows on the shelves are a familiar sign. Built-in shelving uses the full height and width of a wall, which holds far more than a standalone unit.

A few of the things people ask us to solve include:

  • Books with nowhere left to go
  • Shelves deep enough for large books
  • A bare wall above a doorway
  • Bookcases that lean or wobble

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?

Tips worth knowing

People planning built-in bookshelves often ask about these. They help before and after fitting:

  • Mention any radiator on the wall
  • Measure your tallest and deepest books
  • Let us know about access early
  • Book your electrician first if sockets need moving

Make a note of the paint colour used. Hand-painted finishes are the easiest to touch up in place.

Keep heavy things on low shelves, and never climb the shelves to reach the top.
