Built-in bookshelves in Greenhill, Camden
Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on built-in bookshelves in Greenhill starts with a design visit, and everything is made in our workshop.
- Shelves that sag under books
- Alcoves beside the chimney breast going to waste
- Room for a record collection

About our built-in bookshelves in Greenhill
We make built-in bookshelves from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood in our workshop. MDF suits the panels and faces, while birch plywood is used where strength matters. The finish is spray painted in the workshop or hand painted, in the colour you choose. We work across London, including Greenhill. We make built-in bookshelves from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and people most often get in touch about a home library or study and empty alcoves that could hold books.
With a large share of homes around Greenhill built before 1919, the living room is often two rooms knocked through, with a chimney breast in each half. That can mean one pair of alcoves for shelving and the other for low cupboards, with the screen on a chimney breast between. Older internal walls can be lath and plaster rather than brick, which changes how shelving is fixed, and long shelves are sized so they don’t sag under books.
A quote in writing follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish.

When is bespoke worth it?
Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot normally do that in an older room.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Bespoke is not instant: there’s a design visit, a quote and workshop time. If you are renting or moving soon, a good standalone bookcase may be the better buy. Ready-made units stop well short of a tall period ceiling, and that space collects dust instead of storage. Built-in pieces can run to the cornice or the picture rail.
No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

Is it time for built-in bookshelves?
Often, the books simply have nowhere left to go. They’re stacked on the floor, two deep on the shelves or packed into boxes. Built-in shelving uses the full height and width of a wall for far more space than a standalone bookcase.
Here’s what built-in bookshelves can help with:
- Books piled on the floor
- A room lined with books
- A bare wall above a doorway
- Bare walls that could hold shelving
Close to Hampstead Heath? Built-in bookshelves can be arranged to keep the window and the light clear.

FAQs: built-in bookshelves in Greenhill
Do you make built-in bookshelves for homes in Greenhill?
Yes. Greenhill is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Camden and London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with some details.
My house in Greenhill is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?
Yes, that is normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.
Can my walls take a full bookcase?
The wall is checked when we measure. Fixings are chosen to suit solid brick, lath and plaster or a stud wall, and heavy loads are fixed into sound structure. If the plaster is loose or the wall is weak, it should be put right first.
What happens if there’s a radiator where I want shelves?
It needs planning. Any shelving over or around a radiator needs room for the heat to move into the room. If you’d rather move it, that is for a plumber, and is best done before we fit.
Do I need the building owner’s consent?
Possibly. Leases vary, and some require the building owner’s consent for alterations. Your lease is something we cannot advise on, so it’s worth checking before fitting day.
Can bookshelves go around a door?
Yes. A bookcase around a door or window uses the whole wall. We measure the openings at the design visit.
Living-room storage in Greenhill
In the streets around Greenhill, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 65%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 10%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Near the centre of Greenhill, Historic England’s list includes Institute of St Marcellina (Grade I), less than half a mile west, and Burgh House (Grade I), less than half a mile north. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, such as fixing into original panelling. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. About 65% of homes in the streets around Greenhill were built before 1919, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Alcoves either side of a chimney breast and tall ceilings make older houses natural homes for built-in shelving.
If you live in a flat close to Hampstead Heath station, built-in bookshelves are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. The wider area includes historic houses like 2 Willow Road, about 0.3 miles north-east. For a period home anywhere nearby, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for built-in bookshelves.
Greenhill is in the London Borough of Camden, about 3 miles south-east of St Pancras. Wherever you are in Greenhill, the process is the same: a design visit, a written quote, furniture built in our workshop and fitting in your home. Greenhill is one of 28 places on our list for Camden.
In NW3 and NW6, the process is the same as anywhere else in London. You will find streets here such as Back Lane, Well Road and Ornan Road, and homes on each of them are within our area for built-in bookshelves. Close by, we also work in Hampstead (1 mile south-west), Vale of Health (1 mile north), West Hampstead (1 mile west), Fortune Green (1 mile west) and Haverstock (1 mile south-east). We also make built-in bookshelves in nearby places like St Pancras (3 miles south-east), West End (4 miles south-east), St Giles (3 miles south-east), Seven Dials (4 miles south-east), Holborn (4 miles south-east) and Bloomsbury (3 miles south-east).

What we do not do
We do not treat damp or carry out building work, so these points are worth knowing:
- Relocating radiators or pipework
- Redecorating, which is for your decorator
- Moving sockets or switches, which needs an electrician

What happens on fitting day
Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and that happens on fitting day. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it. How long the fitting itself takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Parking on terraced streets can be tight, particularly in a controlled parking zone, so details of permits, bays and any loading restrictions help. The van is unloaded quickly, with the sections carried straight in. Saturday fitting can be arranged.
- It starts when you tell us about the wall and your books.
- At the design visit we measure and plan the shelves together.
- We send a written quote.
- We make the shelving in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- The shelving is fitted, fixed and checked with you.
Preparing the room
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
- Let us know where the boiler and meters are
Ask for a quote
If you know what you want, say so; if you do not, that is fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, fill in our short enquiry form.
