Common questions about built-in bookshelves
How do you fit built-in bookshelves in a flat in West Hampstead?
We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Built-in bookshelves are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.
Do you cover homes near Finchley Road & Frognal station?
Yes, homes across Camden and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with some details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
What happens at the design visit?
It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a written quote.
My walls aren’t straight. Is that a problem?
That is normal in older homes, and it is what scribing is for. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.
Will built-in bookshelves sag?
Whether a shelf sags depends on how long it is and what it carries. We choose the shelf thickness and material to suit. Spreading heavy books helps too.
Do I need to be in when you fit?
We need access, so someone has to let us in. You do not need to watch us work.
How we make built-in bookshelves for West Hampstead
Span, depth and load decide whether a shelf will stay straight. For a long shelf of books, we use a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support part way, or we divide the run with uprights. Birch plywood is strong and helps shelves stay flat under heavy books. People normally come to us about bare walls that could hold shelving and bowing shelves in an old bookcase, and the answer is made at our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
Picture rails, deep skirting boards and plaster cornices are part of the character of older houses, and built-in bookshelves need to meet those lines neatly. Homes built before 1919 make up a large share of the housing around West Hampstead, so mouldings are something we expect to talk about at the design visit. The top line can stop at the rail or run on to the cornice, depending on the room.
A quote in writing follows the design visit. It sets out the design we have talked through, the materials and the finish, so it’s clear what’s included.

More for homes in West Hampstead
DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is usually a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.
A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.
How fitting works for built-in bookshelves
When we arrive on fitting day, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. Next, we carry in the sections built in our workshop, one at a time. How long the fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and your quote sets out the fitting days. If your hall still has its original tiles or boards, they’re covered before any carrying starts. Drilling into lath and plaster is done with care, so the plaster around stays sound. Any decorating around the new pieces is for your decorator.
- You contact us about shelving around a door, a window or a chimney breast.
- We visit to measure the wall, the openings and the skirting, cornice and picture rail the shelves must meet.
- We then send a quote in writing for the bookshelves.
- We build the shelving in sections in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit the shelving in your home, scribing the edges to follow the walls and ceiling, so there are no gaps along the sides.
- Your chosen finish is sprayed before fitting or painted by hand in the room.
Preparing the room
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
- Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
Arranging a design visit
Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, once the room is measured and the design talked through. To arrange a visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Boards, parts and paint
Moisture-resistant MDF
Moisture-resistant MDF is stable and takes paint well, which suits uprights, side panels and doors. It suits shelving on an external wall, which can be colder.
Plinths and scribe strips
Most period walls need scribing. It gives built-in shelves their built-in look.
What it costs
Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. What affects it comes down to:
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
- Spray painting or hand painting
- Doors and drawers, and how many
- How square the room is
How it is painted is part of the price: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.
What to send when you get in touch
Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
- Rough measurements: width, height and depth
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
- What the furniture needs to hold
To get a quote for built-in bookshelves in West Hampstead, fill in our short enquiry form. Let us know the room and the rough idea, with sizes if you have them. We’ll arrange a design visit, then send a quote in writing.
Living-room carpentry in West Hampstead: local notes
Homes built before 1919 make up about 63% of the housing in the streets around West Hampstead, with about 10% built between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how built-in bookshelves are fixed and fitted. Near the centre of West Hampstead, Historic England’s list includes Church of St John (Grade I), less than half a mile east, and Institute of St Marcellina (Grade I), under half a mile east. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for instance removing original joinery or fixing into it, can need listed building consent from the council. It is worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. London’s red routes are run by TfL, and stopping on them is tightly controlled. If you live on or close to a main road in West Hampstead, let us know at the measuring visit. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.
If you live near Kilburn Grange Park, built-in bookshelves can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it. If your children go to Emmanuel Church of England Primary School or a school nearby, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design. For a flat near Finchley Road & Frognal station, it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.

Bespoke built-in bookshelves or ready-made?
Bespoke shelving takes longer than buying from a shop: there is a design visit, a quote and workshop time. If you’re only staying a short while, standalone shelving can make more sense. Standard furniture is drawn for modern rooms, so its proportions can look odd in a tall period room, while fitted furniture can follow the room’s own lines, with panels and details to suit the house.
Every room is priced on its own, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. You’ll see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.
