Built-in bookshelves in Bloomsbury
Span, depth and load decide whether a shelf will stay straight. For a long shelf of books, we use a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support part way, or we divide the run with uprights. Birch plywood is strong and helps shelves stay flat under heavy books. If your home has low shelves children can reach and empty alcoves that could hold books, built-in bookshelves made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.
Most households around Bloomsbury live in purpose-built flats, from mansion blocks to modern developments. A mansion block flat often keeps its chimney breast, alcoves and high ceilings, while a newer flat is more likely to have plasterboard walls and an open-plan room. Either way, built-in bookshelves are made for the room as it is.
The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

Flats, conversions and lettings
Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the measuring visit, and we will plan the fitting around them.
For flats on red routes or busy main roads, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so it is worth raising at the measuring visit.
Could you do it yourself?
Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it’s easy to buy.
Boards, parts and paint
Spray-painted finish
A sprayed coat gets into corners and along edges and leaves no brush marks. The colour is agreed before we start.
Moisture-resistant MDF
MDF gives sharp edges and smooth faces, ready for spray or hand painting. We use the moisture-resistant grade for fitted work.
FAQs: built-in bookshelves in Bloomsbury
Does a conservation area in or near Bloomsbury affect fitted furniture?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.
Can you fit furniture in a home close to London Euston station?
Yes, homes across Camden and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.
Do you work on Saturdays?
Yes, Saturdays are possible by arrangement. Just mention it when you contact us, and we’ll see what we can do.
Do I choose the paint colour?
The choice is yours. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you’ve chosen.
Can you fit furniture on an external wall?
An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture. If there is damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.
Do I need to be at home on fitting day?
We need someone to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.
From workshop to your room
Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and that happens on fitting day. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. In a block of flats, the stairs, landings, lift and doors matter as much as the room: built-in bookshelves are made in sections sized for each of them. Some older blocks have small lifts or none, which the design allows for.
- You contact us with a short note about the shelving you have in mind.
- We come to measure, look at how the wall is built and agree the layout.
- You receive a quote in writing setting out the shelving, materials and finish, for you to look over.
- We make the shelves and carcasses in our workshop.
- The shelving is fitted in your home, scribed to the walls and fixed to suit them. A hand-painted finish is applied on site, if you chose one.
