Built-in bookshelves for your home in Clerkenwell

Built-in bookshelves in Clerkenwell: what you get

Span, depth and load decide whether a shelf will stay straight. Long spans carrying books need a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We often use birch plywood, which is stiff and strong. If you are living with storage for children’s books and games and shelving that frames a window, built-in bookshelves made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand can solve it.

Around Clerkenwell, most households live in purpose-built flats, so living rooms often double as dining rooms or home offices. Built-in bookshelves can bring shelving, closed storage and a screen into one run, keeping the floor clear. Walls in flats can be brick, concrete, block or plasterboard, so fixings are chosen for each one.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it.

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so each section is sized to get through.

Built-in bookshelves for homes in Clerkenwell

About 32% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Clerkenwell went up before 1919, and about 28% since 2000, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Clerkenwell is partly covered by a conservation area, according to Historic England’s records. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Your council can advise if you’re unsure. A quarter or more of the homes in the neighbourhood around Clerkenwell (about 28%) were built since 2000, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). In homes built since 2000, living rooms are often open-plan with stud walls, so built-in bookshelves are fixed into the studs or stand on the floor.

Dr Johnson's House, about 0.8 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at. Living in a block of flats near Farringdon station? Then it’s useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.

Fitting day, step by step

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and that happens on fitting day. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it. How long the fitting itself takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. With little room to spare in a flat, pieces come in as they’re needed. Floors are covered and dust is kept down. The fixings suit each wall, whether solid or stud.

  1. You contact us with a short note about the shelving you have in mind.
  2. We visit to measure the wall and talk through the design. Long spans and heavy books are planned for at this stage.
  3. Your quote follows, with the design, materials and finish set out.
  4. We make the shelves and carcasses in our workshop.
  5. We fit it in your home, fixed securely to the wall. A hand-painted finish is applied on site, if you chose one.

How to prepare

  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to

Arranging a design visit

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we have measured up and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, use our contact form.

When you need someone else

Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work are not part of what we do. There are a few other points to bear in mind:

  • Making good walls that can’t take fixings
  • Moving sockets or switches, which needs an electrician
  • Plumbing work around the shelves

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How it works.

What it’s made from

  • Fixed and adjustable shelves
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Cupboards below
  • Moisture-resistant MDF

When is bespoke worth it?

If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

What prompts built-in bookshelves in Clerkenwell

For some, the aim is a home library or a quiet study. A room lined with books feels different.

If you recognise any of these, it’s worth talking to us:

  • Books with nowhere left to go
  • A bare wall above a doorway
  • Storage for children’s books and games
  • Shelves deep enough for large books

If your children go to St Peter and St Paul RC Primary School or a school nearby, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design.

Choosing a carpenter

  • How they handle walls that are not straight
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
  • Whether you’ll get a written quote, not just a figure
  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?

Questions we’re often asked

Do you make built-in bookshelves for homes in Clerkenwell?

Yes, we work across Islington, Clerkenwell included, and across the rest of London. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

I live near Farringdon station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Islington and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.

How are built-in bookshelves fixed to the wall?

That depends on how the wall is built. We fix bookshelves with fixings that suit the wall, into sound brick or studs. If a wall is not suitable, we will tell you.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You choose it. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture. If there is damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.
